Hi all,

Just a few quick questions about Apple's release systems:

Is the GM considered a Release Candidate - meaning it is essentially production ready with a few bugs to squash or is GM the release, but just not released yet?

Another question I have is if someone is using iOS 11 Beta or GM, can they upgrade to iOS 11 Release version or do they have to wipe and reload?

Thanks,
--Shawn

GM is most likely the final version unless they need to fix a major bug before the conference. The GM that was leaked will be loaded onto the new iPhones being announced.

If someone upgrades to the GM build then they do not need to do anything, except remove the beta profile. If you are on beta (dev or public) builds then you can simply remove the profile and expect to download the GM build on release date. It is recommended that you do a clean install (wipe and reload) when iOS 11 is released.

So if I'm running 10.3.3 is it recommended I wipe and reinstall for 11?

no, thats poor advice & its pointless, time consuming & hectic for the user for no reason at all. u just back up before updating, then update it over air or itunes whatever u want, when the update is finished, continue using the device, done. like how apple intended it to be, or else there wouldnt be an update process in the first place.

its just the belief of some people that u have to do it or "should". ios is filled with more myths than facts

Personally I recommend wiping on new installs of Windows and Linux (8 to 10) or ubuntu 16.10-17.04 but phones you don't really have that option most of the time

in General you just upgrade, no need to wipe first. The only time where you may find that you have to is after running beta versions and that is only if you find that things are a bit wonky after going to the GM and a setting reset doesn’t fix it.

Will the betas update to GM OTA, or do you have to download a separate IPSW? I can't remember for sure, but I think I remember having to download GM manually (meaning, download the IPSW and installing it via iTunes) from a beta, but I could be wrong (it seems wrong, but this is how I remember it for some reason).

This is ridiculous advice. You're always on the beta posts praising every beta release, why would you tell someone not to update?
because ios 11 beta releases have been trash. damn near everyone on this board is saying the same thing. So what I would like for you to do here is read the posts and stop assuming im talking out of my ass

I'm not saying people are not having issues, but the last few betas run like final code on my iPad Pro. I can't imagine a reason not to upgrade to iOS 11 the moment it comes out. Sure, a few bugs will be present, but the productivity boost alone is worth it. Heck, it was worth it in beta 1, let alone now. Just my opinion.

“Nearly everyone?” I can count on one hand the people trashing these betas. I have been running these iOS 11 betas on the 6s, 6s Plus, and Pro 9.7. And I just updated my main driver the 7. I don’t think these classic complainers will ever be happy. I hope they stay on 10.3 so they stop cluttering these threads with their same tired complaints. My 7 is faster than my 6s and Plus and that is all that matters.

I would hope your 7 is faster than your 6s which has a newer processor... -_-

Exactly. And thanks for pointing that out. I should have clarified myself better. Knowing how forums work these days that just leaves me open for snarky comments.

The number of “7 and 7 Plus are too slow” comments lead me to believe the 7 had some unique issue. Nope. All three phones run like I expect them to. Newest being the fastest. At first I thought maybe the new home button on the 7 was the culprit or its processor but I just don’t see what these other posters are seeing.

Betas have been running great on my iPad Mini 2. The latest public release runs like a stable release, so much so that I've put it on my iPad Pro 12 (2 gen). Zero complaints. In fact, I think my (ancient) Mini 2 runs better then it did on iOS 10.

Hey ! I've got a little question.

I'm currently in vacations and I didn't take my MacBook. My iPhone is on iOS 10.3.3.
Ios 11 GM will probably release tomorrow after the event. Is it possible for me to update my iPhone to the GM without a computer ?

And why would he need the Beta profile if he is upgrading to GM tomorrow. The GM will be for everyone. Not beta testers...
Gold Master is not the public release, it's what Apple consider the final version of 11.0. If for some reason they find some more problems the public build could be a different build number.

Yes, if you install a beta profile.

Because if you read the question, he was asking how to update without a computer.

If you know of a way to get the GM on a phone without a computer and without a Beta profile, I’m sure Apple would like to speak with you.
