From the previously referenced Engadget article:

"According to a just posted Apple support document, the specific models affected were all made between May 2007 and September 2008, and include all 15- and 17-inch models equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors."

Umm, wouldn't that potentially include all macbook pros with the 8600 chip made before the unibodies came out?

"If your MacBook Pro falls into that lot, and the problem occurs within two years of your original purchase date, Apple says it'll repair it free of charge, even if it's out of warranty." [emphasis added]

So, if you don't have applecare, and your chip fails 2 years and one day after it was originally purchased, Apple could refuse to fix the known defect.

Fair enough. ;)

Im loving my 2.5Ghz MBP, its awesome.

The highest performance is the 2.6Ghz BTO Option, it was £200 more, so i doubt many people opted for it.

I'm thinking of (or rather my friend is) buying that model refurbished from the Apple Online Store. Does it get hot after extended use? I remember how the MBPs (classic) tend to get very hot.

Yeah, a friend handed me her 17" 2.5 to look at after she was just doing some light browsing. It startled me so much from how hot the bottom was that I almost dropped it.

Which could also help explain the chip failure rate on the nvidia 8600 cards...

Yup, hotter temperatures will wear the GPU's substrate bond faster. On second thought I might tell my friend to hold that thought and go with a unibody MBP.
