Is google earth needed on the iphone, Whats the difference between google earth and maps?
 
They're totally different. Maps is just that, a flat map you can look at and plan routes on. Earth is a full 3D planet, you can zoom in and see mountains and so on in full 3d.

I.e. maps is a useful tool for route planning, earth is more of a fun app for exploring the world.
