Hi,

As one of the latest victims of the "replacement cycle" (various issues: yellow, dead pixels etc,) with the new imacs and on number 4 at the moment, I recently took matters in to my own hands re:the "dust behind the glass" and once you have pried that glass off and cleaned it (and the bare lcd panel) you will hit yourself in the head for making such a big deal out if it.

It really is *incredibly* easy to take the glass off (suction cup from top) and wipe these surfaces. Considering how common this problem is, and how easy it is to "fix", I am surprised it's not in the "getting started" booklet.

For suction cups, I simply borrowed some from my shower radio but any decent sized suction cup would likely work (e.g., some toy from the dollar store).

If your screen is otherwise perfect and your hardrive is quiet, do yourself a favour and don't send your iMac back for such an easy fix!

Maybe Apple should be simply adding suction cups to the package?

I have an i5 quad mid-2010 and my screen is perfect! No yellow, no dead pixels, no backlight bleeding. I love it!

But isn't it just as likely that, if you take the glass off, you'll introduce new dust particles to the back of the glass in the short time gap between wiping one last time and reinstalling it?

Yes, but If find that it is very easy to just pop-out the top of the glass, and give it a quick wipe and set the glass back in place. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Without any tools, I can have the glass popped back, wiped and replaced in 3-4 seconds. It really is easy to do. Just use a lint free cloth.

You're right. It's best to do the wiping in as dust free a room as possible (i.e. not outside), and do one last wipe at the very end. Note: I don't recommend popping the glass off in the bedroom, as the odds of getting a pube stuck behind the glass are high ;-)

Cheers,

Forgive me if I am misinterpreting you but... are you saying that cleaning the glass from the inside fixes both stuck dust and colour tinge problems or just the stuck dust?

BTW, 3rd BTO 21.5 iMac and still colour uniformity problem :(

Wiping the glass from the inside has nothing to do with the yellow tinge and will not solve that problem. The tinge has to do with the LCD display itself, probably the phosphorous coating over the individual LEDs. The glass just acts as a shield in front of the display and won't have anything to do with the tinge.

This has been fixed with a firmware update for quite a while now.

I've bought a 27" iMac i5 several weeks ago, and it never showed that problem even without the firmware update. But I must add that I purchased a computer from the show room, so I was 100% sure that the display was perfectly in order.

Anyway, I think it's generally perfectly safe to purchase a 27" iMac now. In doubt, go to a store, ask for a demonstration and purchase exactly the computer that they showed you.

Of course, you can also wait for a refresh - which nobody can tell you when that might be and what problems the next generation of machines might have.

This is incorrect information you are providing. PLEASE verify things before you post.

Firmware did NOT fix the yellow tint NOR was it supposed to. It addressed other issues.

Recent iMacs STILL have the yellow tint issue.

I agree. The yellow tint issue was neither fixed nor advertised as fixed via the firmware update. With this being such an expensive purchase, it's pretty irresponsible to make false claims.

I bought my 27" i7 mid May of 2010. As soon as I received it I did the test posted here at Mac Rumors for determining yellow tint. I had the classic case, location wise, noticeable to me.

I set everything up again to double check but had my wife look without her knowing what to look for or that anything could be wrong, totally blind- she pointed out the yellow!

We decided to live with it, my luck I would never get a good one, it would never end (but that's my luck). I could just see myself saying I should have kept the first one cause it wasn't that bad....

I don't think about it. I don't see it while editing pics. I would never know I had it if I didn't do the test outlined here. So, basically I'm happy with it-

I have issues with backlight leak on the bottom right and left hand side of the screen, but you can only tell on a dark/black background.

Even went into the Apple store with it and the genius guy confirmed this.

Have a couple of days left to decide what to do!

Now this is my 5th imac 27 i5 had same issues plus a few other things.

Don't realy know what to do i love the machine and the wife does not want a laptop so that leaves me with the imac but for the money you expect no issues!

So the only option is to return it and try another replacement with the fear of getting a worse one.
Get a refund and wait for an update.
Buy a Windows PC (No thanks)

hmm :(

I have just packed my 5 day old 27" iMac i5 and have arranged to return it, after having discovered the yellowing issue. The colour of the bottom 1/3 of the screen was different to the top! As a photographer this isn't going to work for me. Have decided to replace it with the base Mac Pro model and a separate screen (none glossy).

It is a shame apart from this issue it was a joy to use. I am surprised this issue has been around for so long?

Facts aren't opinions.

So it is a fact that there is not a problem with the Imac displays? Do you think everyone on this board is lying?

I personally had two of them, and returned the first one. Was this just bad luck? If only 1 out of 1000 was bad, do you know what the chances of me getting back to back bad copies are two weeks later? Pretty slim.

I'm wondering how you are coming to the conclusion there is no problem

Photography is what I use it for as well, which makes it difficult to use because you have to do all of your white balancing looking at only the top half of the photograph. I have learned to get around it, but still want to get it fixed. $2k is too much money to spend to have to find a work around.

Was yours noticeable by just looking at it, or did you have to use the internet grey bar test to tell? If I can't tell without running a test, I wouldn't really care. With mine, it is noticeable without running the test, which is why I have a problem with it.

Mine was noticeable without the test. But I am a photographer so I see these things. For £1684 I expect things to be right. You shouldn't have to make do!

useful Mac serial info

I was a graphic designer for years and was very anal about subtle variations in color because I had to be for my career.

I got an EXTREMELY late Corei7 2.8 27" machine on 6/26 (can anyone give me a clue how to check WHEN and WHERE it was built based on serial).

The screen on this is as close to perfect as I could hope for - no perceivable yellow tinting towards the bottom and no "flooding" on the lower right or left corners.

That doesn't mean a problem doesn't exist for others.
Yes I can, been using it for years: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html Enjoy!

My brand new machine delivered two weeks ago has a very faint grey bar along the bottom (near the dock level). Barely noticeable, but still. Not sure what to do with it. Am a little bit annoyed for a £2200+ machine. For now, I'll live with it.

Of our seven iMacs with the 27" screen we've never had the yellow screen trouble, only one faulty backlight. (all business use, I'm not a iMac obsessive.)

I'll throw in my anecdotal experience:

Nov. 2009 27" iMac: Obvious yellow tinge. Returned.
Aug. 2010 27" iMac: Much more uniform. Yellow tint not obvious.

Progress has been made, but I'd expect a few bad panels are still floating around.

My 2011 27" imac brought in June also display a little yellowish tint at bottom 1/4 of the screen.

It doesn't bother me too much unless I specifically looking for it. Plus the machine have 3 years Apple Care, so I can always ask Apple to replace the screen if the tint gets any worse.
