Is iMovie fast on new MacBook Pros?

I have a late 2008 2.4Ghz MBP with 3GB of RAM and Snow Leopard. It's great, but recently I've started to use iMovie a lot more for slideshows. One thing that frustrates me is the speed of iMovie. It takes several minutes for iMovie to get in a usable condition when opening, and then when working with a large project (~13 minutes, 175 photos), it's very slow.

I'm guessing this might be a processor and GPU issue which makes me wonder if a new MacBook Pro with say a 2.2Ghz i7 and 4GB of RAM would be faster with iMovie. Any comments?

Yes, it would be faster...pretty much as fast as you need it to be. I'd get more RAM than 4GB though.

Depending on your specific model you should be able to run 6GB or 8GB in that machine. Check here:

Getting >4GB will make all the difference in the world. Your 2.4GHz chip should be plenty fast for iMovie.

Also try the normal stuff like repair permissions on your hard drive.
