My Macbook pro can't update past Big Sur.
If I upgrade to iOS 16 on my devices, will they still be compatible with Big Sur?
I especially need reminders, notes and iCloud drive to keep working between iOS 16 and Big Sur.

I remember with macOS Mojave, things like Reminders would break if you upgraded past iOS 14. And I think with older versions of iOS, iCloud file compatibility would be broken with older versions of MacOS.

One other thing is Messages, they behave a little bit differently between the two versions now. When deleting messages in iOS/iPadOS 16 and Ventura, they go into a "Recently Deleted" area...similar to how to deleted emails go to a deleted folder. You can then delete them from there, or recover them within 40 days.

Not exactly sure how this works when the two systems behave differently... When deleting a message on the iPhone, does it delete it right away on the Mac, or does it get deleted when it's permanently deleted on the iPhone?

Same goes the other way around... When a message is deleted on the Mac, does it get deleted right away on the iPhone, or does it go into the "Recently Deleted" area?

There's this thread (one of many) that describe the syncing funkiness.

Be careful, couple years ago my Mac minI was on Mojave or something and couldn’t support backing up my Phone which was on ios14 or 15. Apple is very happy to make it so if you’re not on the latest on each device they’re not compatible

I haven’t noticed any compatibility issue with my devices, new phone and ipad on the latest releases, and my 2013 Big Sur MacBook Pro. Backups and syncs work just as they always have. Syncing I’ve found to always be a little haphazard for Reminders and Messages. But usually if I leave the computer awake long enough eventually everything syncs properly. Other than Safari which doesn’t display iCloud tabs nor Frequent Sites most everything else seems to function well, even telephone calls come in when I’m using the computer. But I primarily use my iPad Pro these days so I frequently shut the laptop down for days between backing up my devices which I do weekly.
