It's a three year old OS with minor tweaks. Looks like Apple also has fallen into this rehash OS formula like Blackberry. Is it time for Apple to go another direction? Android is the 800 pound gorilla and IMO Apple needs to step up thier game once again. What say you?

I think it's still fine. There isn't really a need for any major changes, and small tweeks are better since you don't have to relearn something you already know how to use.

Are you perhaps confusing UI and OS? iOS is a continually-developed FreeBSD-based operating system upon which have been built a number of excellent system frameworks (including excellent new multitasking frameworks introduced just months ago). There is nothing stagnant or outdated about iOS.

I don't complain that the round wheels on my car "look dated". Even though round wheels have been around "forever".

It works as good as can be or it doesn't. Period.

I would say so, yes.

Windows 7 Mobile is quite snazzy but I believe that Android and iOS is looking a little stiff and dated. I really do love my iPod and chances are I'm never going to buy anything else, which is why I'd rather Apple update their OS than buy another product.

Why can't iOS display information on the hold screen? Weather/date, itemised missed calls, itemised notifications... or just how many of each new notifications I have.
Why can't I place icons exactly where I want them?
Why can't all apps be placed in standby mode?
Why can't I select an MP3 for the notification sound and why can't I change the email sound?
Why can't orientation lock lock the current orientation, not the default portrait orientation?
Why do I have to slide to unlock, why can't I just double tap home from sleep mode?
Why can't I select triple-tap home to bring up iPod controls?
Why are all my fully tagged TV shows listed as episode 0?
Why can't I select my own icons for homescreen web links (for sites that haven't made their own)?

Why is my phone being excluded from updates when it is only a year old? (Hero, Eris, XT720l, etc.)

Why is there bloat-ware on my PHONE? (Droid X/2 - Blockbuster App)

Why can I not remove carrier branded crap from my phone? (Verizon)

Why does my camera always make a sound despite silencing the phone? (Droid X/2)

Why is Android less intuitive than the iPhone?

Where the hell is the Google Maps app on my phone? (Galaxy S on Verizon)

Why is there no syncing app from Google? (OSX, MP3s)

I say yes. Contrarily to what most people think, Apple didn't predict properly where the market was going with iPhone 1 (not saying that it wasn't a great product for it's time). Apps are big and especially with the iPad, I think people want more control.

I think it's so dumb that when apple puts a 'new' feature in the iPhone, it's called so innovative and whatever when we had it in mac os forever. iOS 2 should have been a departure, I think now apple stuck itself in a corner with too many users and developers to do big changes. I still think they should open the file system.

I say your opinion isn't important to Apple, at all.

iOS is the world's most advanced and powerful operating system that has been made for a phone.

In your opinion. Whether or not something is the best is subjective.

I believe iOS will have at least a ten year lifespan. I've been using Windows XP for nearly a decade and I'm still content with it. We are probably close to iOS' peak as it is nearing its mid-life now. It takes 3-5 years for a platform and its software to mature. Think video game consoles as an example. Were the first & second gen games the best? Not really. It took about 3-5 years before consoles like the PS2 hit its stride. Eventually all platforms do become obsolete or replaced. As refined as iOS was in the beginning compared to its competition, it still needed improvement and it took Season 4 until it got most of it right. I was taught in business that there is always a decline after a climb. A slope. The most advanced OS for the next gen might come from RIM next year. I just don't think our hardware and battery technology is there yet to support more advanced looking OSes just yet. But it is inevitable that Apple will build a completely new OS from the ground up. You can only do so much with the current one by pushing it hard before it reaches its limitations.

Why can't iOS display ...

This has nothing to do with the iOS core, it's just UI eye candy which most consumers don't care enough about to affect Apple's device sales to any significant degree.

The important updates to iOS are invisible and under the hood: probably security, and getting the OS ready for good performance and battery life on the A5 chip, etc. Those two items will affect sales to enterprise and consumers next year.

Expiration date? seriously?...you have to be joking.

They can still improve aspects of the OS but it's not like they've been standing still. Humor me, how exactly is Android an 800 pound gorilla compared to iOS? let me guess...notifications? widgets? Google Maps Navigation?

Operating Systems that work well are never out of date no matter how long they've been around. New OSes that are clumsy and difficult to use and inefficient they day they were born are crud no matter how new.

Basically if it's not broke, don't fix it.
I like how easy and smooth iOS is.

Some of the oblivious Apple fanboys in this thread are HILARIOUS. Anyway, to talk about an OS like it has an expiration date just kind of highlights what's wrong with consumers. Always buying the newest device, tossing the old one like it's disposable and never getting full value out of something because they need the newest thing. This is an OS; just because it's not fresh anymore, that doesn't mean it's suddenly not good enough.
