Early on I heard rumors of the mute button being lost due to the increased water resistance. I haven't heard anything lately from the leaks/rumors about this. Anyone care to venture a guess, or any credible leaks which mention this? I'd hate to see this go as it's a differentiating factor from virtually every other smartphone out there and IMO very valuable.

Yes they are taking the mute switch out. You will no longer be able to silence your phone.

I just wish they'd move it. I'm tired of it being flipped on accident when I move it from/to my pocket.

Quick! Now do that while the phone is in your pocket
Reach inside the pocket and do it. In fact it would likely be easier to do that in the pocket with one hand compared to flipping the mute switch in the pocket using one hand.

Same here.
Interesting. I've had that happen once or twice over the years, but certainly not something that's common at all for me. I wonder what would be a different place that wold be better, and at the same time won't cause more "accidents" for someone else (given that current positioning seems to work for many people, while some people seemingly run into issues).

It happens to me all the time to the point it's now getting annoying.

A dedicated mute button is a bit of a waste IMO, just another switch that can do wrong, just another hole for crap to get in.

Personally, I have a feeling they'll remove it sooner than later. I think the mute/rotation switch removal on the iPad was a pilot of sorts, and I don't recall a whole lot of complaining.

Tap, tap, hold on the volume down button or some other simple manipulation would be suffice.
Or they could keep the useful switch they already have and not subject people to garbage like that. Current design is great: I reach into my pocket, and without taking out my phone or going through some absurd sequence, I flip the switch and I know it's silenced. If I'm at all unsure of the orientation, the "buzz" when you flip to silent tells you exactly where you're at.

I never use the mute button since with the Apple watch, my phone's always on mute, because all notifications goes to the watch.

Are we really that lazy a society that we can't take a phone out of our pocket to mute it?

Interesting.

I actually use my phone so it is very seldomly left in my pocket.

It's not about laziness but convenience. Why not get rid of the volume buttons? No need to stop at the ringer switch.

(I still don't quite follow how flipping a mute switch in the pocket really works, let alone how that is more convenient than just pressing and holding the down volume button, for example, as was mentioned as how it might be done if the mute button was removed.)

That said, I'm all for the mute switch being there and remaining there.
