I use my iPad mini retina everyday at home with a 27 inch iMac I think that is the perfect combo.

I don't think so. I find the smaller form factor to be better in a lot of ways than the larger Tablets. They are good for most things and are more portable.

OP I wouldn't necessarily say the mini is a fad but I do agree with you about the size concern. I was about to buy a mini but I already know I'm getting the next iPhone and with it being a larger screen I would feel the iPad mini would be nothing but a waste having it and the new iPhone. That being said I went with the iPad Air which makes much more sense for me. When the new iPhone comes out my setup will be a 27" iMac, 9.7" iPad Air and new iPhone. The perfect balance of screen sizes for different needs.

The mini, due to it's aspect ratio is a good size and offers me considerably more screen real estate over my galaxy note 3. You wouldn't think so with the note being 5.7 inches but it does.

I honestly don't see what anything you wrote made it necessary to quote me but um, okay. You said why the mini was a good fit for YOU. I wrote why the Mini is not at all a good solution for ME due to it being way too small for MY needs.

You said you expected the larger iphone to make the mini unnecessary for you, and Shanghaichica responded that they found the mini offered a lot more space than the Galaxy Note, which is close to the size of the expected bigger iphone. So they were saying the bigger iPhone might not offer as much of a screen size improvement as you might expect. Seems to be a perfectly sensible response to your post.

No it's not. That's what that person THINKS. I just said what works for MY needs. Can't you guys see that? Sheesh. What I am seeing is many of the iPad Mini people seem to feel the need to justify owning the machine and attack anyone's post that prefers the Air. The iPad forum is filled with this.

I don't understand why it is not understood here that MOST people are expressing what works best for them, or their opinion. Of course, there are a few (annoying) threads where people make a blanket statement and expect it to be the same for everyone.

There also seems to be a lot of people around here that want to convince others that just because something works for them it will work for others.

The beauty of personal electronics is that they are...personal :)

Sorry, wrong response to wrong person.

And yes, I agree with your post. I'm honestly tired of some of the iPad mini folks attacking people's post for preferring the Air. It's like they need to justify their purchase. I posted what works for ME.

Same here. I am selling my Air because I decided that the rMini worked better for my needs. At the end of the day it shouldn't matter to anyone what devices anyone else uses. Unless of course, they are Android :p

They were not just saying their opinion on the mini, they were also sharing their experience regarding comparison between the mini and galaxy note. It seems you didn't find his experience interesting or relevant, but I think it is relevant to this discussion, and am glad they posted it.

Also, I don't think that poster was attacking you or disputing your opinion. You said what works for you, they said what works for them. That's how threads like this usually works, isn't it? People say "I prefer the Air" or "I prefer the mini." Just because someone posts they prefer the Air, doesn't mean they are attacking the people who prefer the mini.

As for the rumored bigger iPhone, I think it would be really interesting whether it would replace the mini for many people. People currently THINK a bigger iPhone could make the mini irrelevant, but would it? Or would the difference in screen size between the mini and the big iPhone still be significant? Could someone who now thinks that they will be satisfied with a bigger iPhone change their minds once they actually use such a device?

I have said in a long time, that my iPad mini is the last tablet I will ever buy. I just need a bigger phone - just a little bit smaller than the Note 3 and then tablets is over for me.

It really is redundant.... I feel like iPhone and iPad should have a completely OS system. Why would they run the exact same iOS?!?!

iPhone and Macbook run different OSes. Until then, iPad is a fad.

Then why did you buy one?

Are you saying that in order for devices to have a separate purpose they have to have a different OS?

I had a laptop and desktop, both running Windows at one point. Same OS, different uses.

Just because there's a slight difference in form factor doesn't justify having a different OS. Why shouldn't iPads run iOS? If not iOS, then what? Going by your logic, MacBook Pro is a fad, because it shares the same OS as Mac Pro. Or iMac is a fad because it runs OS X like the Mac mini. Do you even know what a fad is?
A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed enthusiastically for a period of time, generally as a result of the behavior being perceived as popular by one's peers or being deemed "cool" by social media. A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behavior will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.
That most certainly doesn't describe iPads, which have sold over 200 million units over the past 4 years with no end in sight, have defined and dominated an entirely new marketplace for personal computing, and continue to evolve into more powerful and productive solutions for millions of users.

There are far too many who are shortsighted enough to be of the mindset "If it doesn't work for me, it doesn't work for anyone." or "If I don't like it, nobody should like it." I don't like Windows, but it would be equally foolish of me to think of Windows as a fad, just because it's not my preference.

The iPad mini is not a fad. In fact most tablets are trending smaller in the 7-9" size. For me the sweet spot is 8.5". I prefer the 4:3 format which is why I use iPad's primarily. If you like 16:10 then currently the only option is Android. The new Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 is killer but it requires good eyesight as the screen resolution is pretty high for a small tablet.

Limiting it to 16GB internal storage for apps kills the killer.
How is this oversight not discussed in reviews.
Otherwise it is better than Amazon's HDX 8.9

I personally enjoy the size of the iPad mini, its alot more handy in use on the go, my parents got an iPad Air, compared its huge and is not suited to my needs, I know there are very many mini´s sold to, so I cant see that it´s a fad.

Oh so now you're changing your entire thread? I thought you were asking if iPad "MINI' was a fad? Well, I won't be taking this thread seriously any longer. Adios.

The iPad is perfect for me. I'm willing to compromise lightweight for utility. I have an iPad 4 and, even with a folio case, it's fine. I watch movies on it on the train commute to the city and I'll use it when I have too many tasks open on my laptop. But when it comes to movies, I ordinarily airplay movies from my iPad (iTunes is iffy for some strange reason) to my television.

I don't think mini is a "fad", per se, but it's just too small for me to be comfortable with in terms of tablet preferences.

I respect your opinion and I was only sharing my own experience regarding large phones and the iPad mini. I also don't hate the air or feel the need to say that the iPad mini is better. Some people like the air some the mini and some have both, it's whatever works for you.

I'm in the market for a new large tablet myself and I'm trying to decide between an iPad or an android one. With the air being so light I wonder if I got it how the mini would fit into my set up. It's always been my preferred tablet for on the go because it was light and portable than the galaxy tab I was using.

That depends. Yes, the mini is more portable than the Air, but if you always carry a bag big enough to fit the Air, then the Air is plenty portable. I take my Air with me most of the time. I also have an iPhone, which I use when it is awkward to take the Air out of my bag. So currently, the mini doesn't really fit into my usage. My mom, however, doesn't have a smartphone, and she's loving the original mini I recently passed on to her. She uses it mostly when she goes out, and uses her Air at home.

So you might find that a mini and Air both fits into your life, or you might not. It's hard to say.

Typical fanboyism hahaha :p
It's not "fanboyism" if someone finds technology tools that meet their needs, even if it doesn't meet yours. You obviously have a personal bias against iPads, even if it's other people owning and using them, which isn't a rational attitude. You've gone from asking if the iPad mini is a fad to now claiming that iPads are, indeed, fads. It's now clear that you aren't to be taken seriously.

i own iphone 4S, ipad mini with retina display, and 13" MBA... Surely, i use my iphone 4S the most as I bring it everywhere with me.
Ever since I got a retina iPad 3 with cellular, I've actually used my phone less often. I bring my iPad with me daily and my iPhone 5s has actually been relegated to just dumbphone duties (calling and texting). With iMessage, a lot of the texting duties are done via the iPad, too.

While the aspect ratio of the iPad isn't particularly well suited for widescreen videos, I'd still rather watch on the iPad's bigger screen than on the iPhone's miniscule one when I'm not at home.

You've hit the nail on the head and summed it up quite nicely :)
