Is Iphoto a resource Hog???

I purchased a 27" Imac I7 with 12 gig ram, in Feb 2011 (it does not have Sandy Bridge). When ever I import photos into iPhoto and try to do some thing else, the iMac slows down considerably. Is this normal? I thought the I7 was designed for multi tasking. I am new to the Mac line. Is there something not setup correctly??

I've found that too, I visited the activity monitor last time it happened to discover that until the operation was complete nearly 75% of my ram (4GB) was in use by iPhoto alone!
