Sometimes I wonder when I see people complain about new machines if maybe the speed hits their seeing has to do with Spotlight indexing the drive for the first time? My new MBP is in the mail, but I installed Mavericks on my 2010 17" i7 MBP and I was disappointed the first 10 mins at how sluggish it was... until I saw "all" my resources going to the indexing of my HDD (non-SSD).

I think Mavericks is a big leap from Lion and ML when it comes to graphics performance, Apple is heading the right way, in the past they neglected the graphics on MacOS and were very far behind Windows until iOS came out, now they're porting into MacOS some good features from iOS.

I agree they need to continue improving their graphics drivers, maybe someday we see OpenCL/OpenGL running on a Mac as fast as it is DirectX on Windows, and by then we may no longer need to rely on a Windows booting in order to squeeze all the power from a GPU.

It's not the hardware. There is a thread called something like "gaming on iris pro" here, take a look. Iris pro can handle dota 2 at 2880x1800 with about 50fps so it should have no problem handling gmail. Guess it's a software problem (thought and hoped that we were past this...)
