Hi !

I found this Mac Pro (used):

- 24 core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4 GHz (24 cores / 48 threads, base clock 2.7 GHz)
- 96 GB (12 x 8 GB) DDR4 ECC memory
- 2 TB SSD storage (Apple original)
- 4 TB SSD additionally on hot-swap slot (SATA)
- Radeon Pro Vega II with 32 GB HBM2 graphics memory (MPX module)
- Magic Mouse 2 (black; unused)
- Magic Keyboard with number pad (black; unused)
- Stainless steel frame with wheels

Price: 6500 €

(price for new is around 15-16.000 € )

Is it a good price? I thought about Mac Studio but it is not upgradable, and a top configuration M1 Ultra with a similar configuration cost the same..

a new Mac Pro 2022 probably will cost a lot more,

what do you think? Someone has test a similar configuration with a M1 Max or Ultra?

In the future I will be able to upgrade the CPU with a new Xeon? Or this is the last CPU that I can use it?

thank u!!!

I think you would be dumb buying anything not apple silicon at this point of the game.

I don't like this answer, as this entire forum is about people using their cMP's from 2009-2012 as a daily driver 10 years later.

In terms of this being a good deal or not, I think only you can answer this question. What are your needs for this machine? Is it work? Play? Little of both? How much performance do you need? Do you need additional storage? Do you need PCI-e slots? Windows? Does your software work on M1?

Performance wise, the 7,1 uses Intel chips 2019 and this Studio is a completely different architecture coming out in 2022. Their main use cases are completely different from one another in terms of target audience. Once you answer these questions, the choice will be clear.

Work, I don’t play..

editing, color correction, fx, photo retouching and creative things like this..

Performance like a m1 max.. yew i need a lot of storage for my video project, i edit mainly RAW .

PCI-e slots maybe for future upgrade..

windows: no, i don’t use it

Yes, my software work with M1, probably it is also optimized .. FCPX, Da Vinci..

6.500 EUR is not a cheap price, obviously.
Anyway Mac Studio M1 Ultra with high-specs options (GPU 64 core, memory 128 GB, 2 TB SSD) is about 7179 EUR.
The price difference is very thin.

Normally I would suggest to avoid Apple Silicon (at least for a couple of years), but if the price is almost the same and your daily software and your apps work on Silicon, at this point I would suggest you to choose the Mac Studio M1 Ultra. The only disadvantage is no future upgrade (PCIe slots, storage etc). For your video project you can buy a cloud storage subscription.
Anyway for almost the same expensive price, there is no reason to buy a previous generation machine.

Couldn't agree more with @jvlfilms that the "response" you got on post #2 is not an actual answer to your question, to say the least.

You might want to follow the thread posted below over the next days, the OP will provide updates on comparisons between the two machines:

I'm answering if it were me with the OPs dilemma - If it were me I'd jump on that deal. But then I've been a Mac Pro guy and before that a Power Mac guy for years. The ability to upgrade is very important to me. The Intel Cascade Lake family of chips is pretty speedy IMHO, and with a fast GPU is very capable. The Vega is a Fast GPU. The 24 core is near the top of the food chain.

That's a fantastic price!

I've no idea why people are selling high-spec 7,1s this low though. The performance differences between one and an M1 Ultra are not significant (except in a few choice areas, like video exporting speeds, thanks to the media encoders). So why take such a large financial hit for minimal computing power gains (and losses in certain areas like storage speeds and 3D rendering)?

Even just purely from a financial point of view, it makes more sense to hold on to it at that point, and upgrade in another generation - when the performance has at least lept considerably above what the specced out 7,1 is capable of.

thanks guys, I think that i'll wait a little more to see more test and the new Mac Pro in June,
At this time I own a macbook pro M1 max, and I can wait.. I also see that in Europe the price of the new Macbook pro have take a lot of discount in only a few months.. this is a little sad when you spend a lot of money, I hope that I 'll be able to sell my mbp at a good price in the future months..

Agreed, it’s a very good price… but I won’t complain about people selling their 7,1 for cheap — quite the contrary, I will be more than happy to snatch one of those beasts from them! :)

What could be the decider.....if the original seller took out 3 years AppleCare (which would still be active).
As much a nice price it is, personally I couldn't shell out that much on eBay.

Sure, that amount is still an investment and one would want to do due diligence about where you get it from etc. But OP did not ask about the vendor (no mention of eBay either), only asked whether it was a good deal (i.e. the price). The Apple Care insight you share is indeed a good idea to keep in mind, regardless you end up buying from a friend or stranger.

Well it's a little different now that x86 is clearly on the obsolescence train at Apple. Buying a brand new Mac Pro today might not be the same as buying one 10 years ago.

Does anyone know if these thing can run windows 11? You might be able to squeeze more longevity with microsoft lol

I'm posting this on my 8k 85" monitor. Once you work on 8k, there is no going back to lame 6, 5, 4k screens. Apple talks a lot about 8k work flows, too bad you cannot see an actual 8k shot on a proper 8k display (and I dont consider a 30" dell a proper 8k display). Wake me up when Apple silicon can actually SHOW 8k on a proper screen. Until then, yawn....

I wouldn't get anything until WWDC. That will inform us all, I hope, quite a bit.
