Technically speaking, your not spending anything. And if there are problems that arise, make sure you have AppleCare. Plus if you wait too long, you posted yourself that you weren't sure if he would (later on) buy it for you. Get it while the going's good.

True, true. But knowing him he's also capable of calling me an impatient idiot for not waiting a few extra weeks or saying "Why the hell did I spend so much money for THAT laptop then?!" if the GPU fails. :p

But thats where AppleCare comes in. Atleast they will replace it.

So what have you decided so far?

Like some people have said, you should get it if you need it. Even if the new MBPs were to come out next week, I would be very cautious about buying one of those anyways since they would be Rev A models of their new design and you know how Apple is notorious for buggy Rev A products. The current MBP model represents the last batch of this generation of MacBook Pros and therefore should be the most reliable.

A slight trimming of dimensions as rumored shouldn't cause any of these "Rev. A" problems you talk about. Think iMac -> Aluminium iMac.

To add, change, note on kntgsp's post:
  • If Apple stay in line with Intel's releases: We'll see the 2.4 GHz model stay as 2.4 GHz and the 2.5 GHz model go to 2.53 GHz. The BTO to 2.6 GHz would change to 2.8 GHz. Of course if Apple wants to shift the processors to 2.53 GHz on the low-end and 2.8 GHz on the high-end, I wouldn't complain ;)
  • Remember that while the clock speed increases are tiny, the FSB goes from 800 to 1066 MHz, which should offer a notable improvement.
  • User-replaceable Hard Drive as he said.
  • Mobility 4850 isn't out yet, I don't think. Mobility 3850 is, but it's probably too hot for the MBP. Mobility 3650 is more likely or as you mentioned the GeForce 9600M GT. 9700M GT/ GTS might make an appearance, but again, heat and the fact that Apple isn't really known for putting decent cards in.
I'd wait for the fact that a new design, means the new MBPs are probably going to be lighter, a big plus if you're going to be carrying around a lot. That, and latest rumors point to the release only being a month or so away.

P.S. Snow Leopard is a Summer '09 release, not Christmas.

Just placed my order! ;)

Heading off to college next week, so I couldn't hold off any longer. I am grateful for whatever I can get. Macbook Pro is a solid machine, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. :)
