Ok, so I just traded someone for an iPhone X for my iPhone 8 Plus. I love it so far but the battery life is definitely not what I’m used to. I want to maximize my battery life without sacrificing services and app features. I keep reading that auto brightness should be turned off to maximize battery life. I’m someone that normally likes a dimmer screen anyways so I figure this will be good and save some juice. There is a warning below the option though that this may affect the screen with it being an OLED display. How much should I worry about this? I don’t want to turn this option off it it’s going to possibly hurt my display.

Thank you in advance!

Mine is turned on and always has been. Battery life with my 10 vs the plus model is very compatible. I have no complaints with it.

On my iPads I always turn off auto-brightness and then manually adjust the brightness as lighting conditions change, which suits me better than the iPad making the decision for me. I usually leave it turned on with the iPhone X, though, as I don't use it in quite the same way that I do my iPads or even as often. Either way I am not particularly concerned about battery life, I'm more interested in the comfort of my eyes while viewing the screen. I've been doing this for years, ever since the first iPad, and turning off auto-brightness has never been an issue, never has caused any harm to the device.

I think I’m just worried about the warning it has under the auto brightness setting that I’m curious about. What affect does auto brightness have on the screen that would warrant a warning like that? And is it a brighter setting that would be worse for the device?

Why are you so worried about power consumption? Are you running out during a normal day. Are you living on your phone?

I’m not worried about the power consumption so much. I have sensitive eyes and generally like my screen to be on the darker side and would just like to know if it would hurt my screen to keep it on the same brightness setting at all times. The warning is prompting this question. If I can save some battery power at the same time I’d consider that a plus as well.

Also, I do a lot of work on / from my phone so yes I am on it a lot. Battery life is very important to me. And what business is it anyway of yours if I’m always on my phone? Isn’t that the reason we have these great sophisticated devices?

I’ve read a lot of articles saying the same thing, that the battery life is supposed to be very comparable. I have not seen that yet but the phone could still be calibrating or whatever it does after restoring from backup. We will see.

It will not hurt you screen what so ever by keeping it dim. Keeping it dim is much better that running at full brightness. Go for it and enjoy!

Always keep automatic brightness on, and especially on an iPhone because it works so well compared to other manufacturers take on auto brightness. And I have great battery life.

Turning auto brightness off will only effect negatively on the OLED screen if you keep it on full brightness for a long time. It might develop the OLED burn in. However, if you’re planning to keep it dimmer then it should be fine. Regardless, I’d still recommend to keep the auto brightness turned on, just for good measure.

I just leave it on now, ever since Apple hid the toggle inside accessibility. That + TrueTone has made going to OLED much more bearable. Before, I was turning it off to maximize battery (iPhone 3G ->7). It has come to the point that it adjusts almost exactly to the point of my liking and battery efficiency that I never have to think about it again.

I hate auto-brightness. I always turn it off.
Just curious, but why? You like having to always manually adjust it when you want to use your phone inside a dark room, then again when you go outside in the sun?

Agreed, I like it on also. I never have to adjust my brightness.
I adjust once on a new device.

Autobrightness off, adjust slider all the way down to the left, turn on Autobrightness.

I've found that doing it this way tends to weigh the autobrightness adjustment curve towards being more dim - which is what I prefer.

That said…I have a few jailbreak tweaks installed that offer additional things for me.

Same here, auto-brighness kills my battery, only way I can make it last is with manual brightness.

I find the brightness intensity changes highly annoying. I'd rather change it myself when I find it appropiate. Put it simply, most of the time I don't think about it.

Apple have got the best auto brightness of any phone around. I used to have a note 8 and the auto brightness on Samsung phones is terrible same with pixel phones
