Like basically all Apple fans I’m stoked for the iPhone Edition/8 release. But there is some hindrance in that excitement because I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get one soon after it’s released, or even at all for a while.
I know this is all speculation, but does anyone here think it will be extremely hard to get one on launch day? I’d be ordering through Verizon. I guess carrier supply will be a whole different thing. Just wondering what others are thinking on this. Should I even realistically expect to get an 8/Edition/whatever-they-name-the-thing on launch day?

I would imagine that it will sell out quickly. They always do.

I am thinking it will be much like introductions in years past. Get up at 3am, here, order and go back to bed.

Well I did manage to get a 7+ on Verizon on launch day last year, so here’s hoping I can do the same with the Edition/8. I just am thinking that supply will be more constrained, but then again the 7+ was also, so maybe i will be able to get one after all.

Given that there will *probably* be three models, and a steep entry fee for the X, it could be fairly manageable. As was mentioned above, be ready as soon as orders open up, and you’ll likely get one.

With the price of the top phone being close to the cost of a MacBook, it’s hard for me to part with 1000 bucks or more.

I mean, someone is going to have to get one. Otherwise, none of them will be sold.
May as well be me then haha :D

That’s a good point, entry fee may be a little steep. However installment plans make it a little easier to swallow for many people, so it could be somewhat of a wash. Either way, I’m a bit more confident now. Just seems crazy that in as soon as like 3 weeks I could have the bezelless, futuristic iPhone in hand. Still seems so crazy, it’s been rumored for so long and now it’s almost here. Gonna be fun!

We're all in the same boat. Some will get one, others will have to wait a little. As long as you get on it straight away, the wait shouldn't be too long if you fail to get one for launch day.

I just hope there's no truth in earlier rumours that the OLED one could be released a few weeks after the regular ones.

I managed to receive my 7 Plus quickly last year as well. But given the OLED model having a strong demand due to the redesign and changes, its going to be that much More difficult. I personally don't need the OLED model in my hands on launch day, but I will at least preorder as quickly as possible to help my chances of having a quicker ship date depending on what stock is like.

When people keep gong on about how it will be impossible to get one on launch day, I think about in Futurama when Fry says that no one drove anywhere in New York because there was always too much traffic.

As I recall, there were supply issues for the 7+ that did not resolve until a few months after launch as Apple was unprepared for the demand for the 7+.

Now, personally, when Apple launched the 6s+ I had zero intention of getting one. However, launch weekend just happened to coincide with my porting out from Sprint to T-Mobile. It launched on a Friday, I ported to T-Mob and ordered phones on Saturday and I had both phones (my wife's 6s and my 6s+) on Monday.

Even more interesting was that my wife wanted Rose Gold. She got hers before one of the T-Mob reps who'd put herself on T-Mob's waiting list (for Rose Gold).

Go figure.

I share these concerns as well but am hoping for the best. I think the 8 and 8 plus models will sell better than many expect as they will offer a nice fresh look and some appealing features. Also, a lot of people may be turned off by the entry price of the Edition model, these two factors are at least providing me with some hope. Regardless, I'll be up at 2am my time pounding the refresh button and hoping for the best. After a few years of being late to the show and receiving a delayed delivery I am really hoping to get in on the initial shipments this go-round.

I think it's fair to assume that these will sell out immediately (within minutes). This might not be the case, but best to not dally

I’m hoping to get one on the iPhone upgrade program in the uk. Problem is that last year, you had to reserve one in store on launch day in order to join the iUP. It couldn’t be done online.

If the rumours are even slightly true, and the edition is in even shorter supply than the Jet black plus last year, they’ll vanish on preorder day for people buying it outright and we’ll be left scrambling to Apple.com every morning for what’ll probably be weeks to reserve one.

I don’t think so. I even think this model will be sold out for 6 months.

You don't see Samsung Galaxy 8 Plus' having shortages. AirPods are one thing, but to have a phone out of stock for 6 months when your competitor's new innovation sells like hotcakes... that would be a bad problem for Apple.

I wonder if the release date will be on the 22, or later. This could play a big role in availability; if the Edition is released after the other models, it may be enough time to improve availability and might be easier to get then.

I think that people are over-hyping the "impossibility" of getting the phone on launch day. Sure, it probably won't have as many units ready as other models have in the past, but the expected higher price and the presumed availability of the still very good "7s and 7s+" models means that demand might also be a bit lower as well. Either way, millions of these things are going to be reaching people's hands on launch day, and if you pre-order ASAP, everyone here has just as good a chance as anyone else to be one of those millions. I know that demand will still surpass supply for a while. It always does. But people are acting like Apple is only making 100 of the things or something.

Just curious, how do you describe identical design as 'a new fresh look'?

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will be identical except for the glass on the back and the transition to the metal frame on the sides. The jet black model should be visually almost indistinguishable.

Same applied to me last year. I preordered my 7 Plus and 4.7 iPhone 7, which I received two days later after they launched. I think the factor will be how much initial supply is available for the OLED model, but the constraint will be severe. And How much of the OLED model is actually available through the upgrade program, carriers and through Apple will be interesting due to last years debacle for the upgrade members. Either way, it's just a phone. Whenever I receive it, makes no difference to me.
