pretty easy to see the difference.. i mean, just looking at the icons on the dock.. you could see jaggies on the Air (see iCal for ex.), while you can't on the rMBP. also, even just looking at Apple's main page.. you could read the text on the iphone much clearer on the rMBP.

I'm sorry, but I can't. I'm not doubting you that you see them, but I cannot. So I would not say it is "pretty easy" to see the difference. It isn't, at least not for me.

Some people can tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. I am one of those who can't. I am not that sensitive past a certain point. So for those of you who can tell the difference, good for you! Enjoy your retina displays! For those of us "old guys" who can't, our MBAs do just fine. :D

I'm surprised that so many people find a clear cut difference between an LG screens and Samsung Screens for the Air, but don't see a difference between the Air and a device with Retina Display.

dude...you said that "The display on the Air is very average. Average enough that this thread shouldn't exist."
Of course you are entitled to your opinion which includes the opinion that this thread "shouldn't exist" but in my opinion, that's a silly opinion:p

And what's that got to do with my beef with the other guy you're defending? You're able to read what I said, he wasn't. What exactly are you trying to prove here other than confirming I didn't say the words he claimed?

The display is fine for what it is. After all, the Air is focused on mainly business use, high mobility and long battery life. A higher resolution screen would require the necessary trade-offs of higher power consumption and greater cost. For my uses on my 11", the display is more than satisfactory.

This is my first MBA and I'm a little disappointed because this display has a lot of ghosting :(

Seriously, scrolling a web page makes the text almost disappear. I was aware that this wasn't the best display of the market, but for the price of the MBA i expected something better.

That's what I think.

Perhaps you should send it back. I get no ghosting whatsoever while scrolling a web page and the text is perfectly clear.

Yea, I make it a habit of trying to read text while I'm scrolling through a page. I also like reading pages in books while I'm turning the page back and forth..keeps it interesting.

Such strange habits you have :)

I do not read text while scrolling, but I play games and watch movies on my MBA and the ghosting is there. I put that example because it's the easy way to notice ghosting.

Some peoples feelings are easily hurt when criticisms are made about the average screen the MBA sports. Sad but true.

This is what I don't understand. I love my macbook air. The 12 hour battery is truly insane. Everything else with is it lightning fast.
And for someone coming from HDD to SSD, that too the fastest commercial SSD in the market. THere are no words to describe... "should have sent a poet"

But yea, I do acknowledge that the screen is really average. And really, not something a leading brand like Apple should be releasing in 2013. Yes, it's basically the same screens they released 3 years ago.

I don't know why people don't see that. My Samsung S3 screen is even more crisp and more 'alive' in terms of color... let alone my iPad Retina.

But the Air is still my favorite device of the 3.

I don't know why some people are getting offended. EVERY review site basically has the MBA 2013 screen as a 'con'... though everything else is basically under 'pros'

Because Apple is magic and your opinion conflicts with my worldview.

Eyes and perceptions vary greatly among different people. For example, video judder from low frame rate video gives some of us a headache and even mild nausea, whereas many people love the "film-like quality".

Also, some can clearly see the lack of v-sync on any iPad. For example, quickly scroll something like this forum, and the lines of text bend or become diagonal until scrolling stops. However, many (most?) people can't see it. I can see it on non-retina iPads, but it's REALLY obvious on retina iPads for me.

As for the MBA, I am sensitive to the TN panel color shifting, but don't see pixels as well as some. So the reduced heat, better battery life, and thin/light form factor made the decision easy for me.

Bottom line: it's cool to share our opinions, but don't insult those who don't share our visual perception experience.

I'm not trying to be funny. I actually do have a habit of reading while scrolling (just can't keep my hands off my MBA I suppose...) and I'm able to read website text just fine while doing this. I've never seen anything I would consider ghosting on either my 2012 or 2013 MBA.

Have you compared your computer to ones in an Apple store? Do you see ghosting in all of them?

@OP It's just you.

Macbook Air screen is horrible for something being released in 2013. I have a shelved Acer 6920g which is SIX YEARS OLD, and it has a 1080p screen.

I'm not saying Apple should have put a retina display into their Airs, but at least a 1080p screen would we be great.

Every time I use my external HD displays, or especially when I use my iPad Retina - when I switch back to using the Air, the screen quality difference is really noticeable.

Not saying that it is bad at all... but it should surely be better. This is the only downside to the Air imo. Otherwise it is a perfect machine.

Your 1080p Acer you purchased back in 2007/2008 was about 1100-1200 Euros? Right? That's like $1400-1500 USD.

A 1080P Sony Vaio pro 2013 model costs was over MSRP $1600 as well with only 7 hours of battery life. Sony recently dropped the price down by $300 cause hardly anyone was going to pay those prices. So you can now get it with 256GB and 8GB RAM for around $1350.

The MacBook Air similar equip costs about $1400 with 10-12 hours battery life and 1440 x 900 screen. Apple has not had to reduce their prices. Macbook Air are actually better values than their windows counterparts.

Better hang on to yours as well, as apparently ours are the only two that don't demonstratively ghost the text while scrolling. :)

Never having had a computer at a high resolution (just my iPod Touch 4th generation and my 50" plasma HD TV), the MBA screen seems perfectly acceptable to me and for my needs. I absolutely love this laptop. It's my first apple computer in nearly 20 yrs. The weight, the battery life, the instant-on, and fast charging...it's all great and while I'm sure I'd enjoy a rMBP, it's not something I need and since I don't have one I'm not missing it or trying to adjust to something less. ;)

I'm not even going to get deep into this.

Just going to tell you that when you do price comparison over time, you have to account for inflation.

And additionally, for raw mat price and efficiency... and pretty much costing in general with relativity to demand.

Oh yea, and lets not forget industrial averages.

My Samsung S3 screen is even more crisp and more 'alive' in terms of color...
To be honest, though, that's because the S3 has an incredibly oversaturated screen. Some people think other screens have bad colors when they've seen the S3 (or most other OLED equipped phones), when it's in fact the S3 that's bad from an accuracy standpoint.

With that said, I agree that the MBA's screen is hardly spectacular. I've owned a 2011 13" with the LG screen and now own the 2013 13" with a Samsung. While the Samsung definitely has more accurate colors (warmer) and noticeably better contrast, it's still a TN screen. Good for a laptop TN screen? Definitely. Not more than decent compared to the best these days, though. The difference when compared to the low quality TN stuff in most cheap laptops is quite astounding, however. I'd say that this improvement is even more important than the step up from the MBA's screen to an IPS.

I'm certainly very happy with the screen in my MBA. Like most, I don't need superb color accuracy and wide viewing angles, so a good TN screen will suffice.

I actually preferred the LG screen. The reason is because it is a bar brighter when compare to the Samsung screen, which translates to better battery duration. For example, 5 bars on the Samsung screen panel = 4 bars on the LG screen panel.

Have you measured the difference in batterylife? Just because the LG is slightly brighter (which I've noticed as well) at the same setting doesn't mean the power consumption isn't greater as well.

[MOD NOTE]
Lets stay on topic. If you don't like this thread then move on and don't post in it.

The one thing that I did notice earlier today, was what someone pointed out earlier. These screens arent nearly as glossy as the other screens around.

I was at an outdoors meeting - I could barely see my s3 screen even on full brightness as it has been a tremendously sunny day. However, the air worked much much better. Now that I am paying close attention - The Air screen is not nearly as reflective as my other screens.

It was very pleasant to use outdoors.
