I usually update my IPhone whenever Apple updates it’s design. However for the first time, I am confused about the iPhone 14 design.

According to rumours:

The form factor will be identical to the iPhone 12. It seems tempting to hang on to my iPhone 12 Pro Max

The two pill shaped design is about the same size as the current notch, and may be more visible and annoying than the notch.

It would have been nice if they had to increase the screen estate on the pro max to 6.9”

The new iPhone will be thicker, heavier, and is bringing back those tiny annoying volume circle keys which I find hard to press.

They are changing the speaker grills, I actually preferred the current design.

Camera was looking forward to a periscope lens, but with Apple I guess I cannot have everything.

In terms of features it seems lacklustre: car crash detection, satellite connectivity, no sim does not inspire me to go running out to buy one.

The price with chip shortage etc, it may justify me holding out till they release a foldable iphone with Face ID built into the display.

These are my thoughts anyone else here, on the fence with the iPhone 14 and even 15 design.

Does anyone think the screen on the basic 14 will be brighter? I heard the 13 pro max is 1000 nits and the basic model is 800 nits...,

The samsung ultra is 1750 nits

And my 11 pro max is 800 nits...

The phone is a tool and should be viewed as such, not as a fashion statement meant to keep people from being bored with themselves.

Will the new phone meet your actual needs? That is what the focus should be about, in my opinion.
This is the reality of the situation, I just used my watch to start my fast.. I will admit I'm in phones as toys and not as productivity tools enough, all these youtube videos on phones is a problem...

If you have an iPhone 12 PM why are you looking to upgrade? That phone is fine for at least another 2-3 years… ?

Maximum brightness on the 13 and 13 pro is the same 1200 nits for HDR content, Samsung‘s 1750 is for HDR content exclusively as well I believe (someone correct me if I’m wrong).

Apple tends to keep the same design for at least 3 generations.

Aluminum unibody: 6, 6s, 7
Rounded edge glass sandwich: 8/X, Xs, 11
Flat edge glass sandwich: 12, 13, and expectedly 14

If you want a brand new design, you might have to wait until the iPhone 15.

I’m waiting for the 8” foldable iPhone that’s arriving in 2025. 😁

This year iPhone looks like a 13S release.

Looks like this sierra blue bad boy will be sticking around till 2025.

I have a feeling when Apple did make a foldable, it would be a new lineup with the main iphone retaining the same slab form factor. The iPhone is such a huge cash cow that Apple won't dare messing too much with it. I also think the ipad will get the foldable treatment first, not the iPhone. :)

As far as aesthetics, I don’t think any phone has impressed me since iPhone 5.
What's impressive with the iPhone 5 was how Apple reduced the weight compared to the 4/4S while adding LTE and larger screen.

Alas battery tech is not advancing at the same rate, and modern smartphone use dies need more battery, which translated to larger/heavier body.

Agree, the slab form factor isn’t going anywhere.

Hopefully we see these  foldables sooner rather than later.

smartphone design has peaked years ago, what do you expect? now that we reached the bezel-less form factor meme, they are starting to shill foldable phone meme just to keep people buying new stuff, but the truth is, the design peaked around iPhone 5

I remember thinking that a phone could be made of any material and be as densely packed with as much tech as we want because weight would never be an issue for such a small device. This was before phones started getting bigger. Huge oversight lol.

iPhone 5 was a downgrade respect iPhone 4.
While 5 was one aluminum case the 4 was a multilayers case in glass and stainless steel.
When you try to open a 5 you need to dissembled whole device, on 4 just slide the rear glass panel.
iPhone 4 was the most designed iPhone ever, with all its issues.
Compare iPhone 4 design and Mac Studio and you could understand how the old Apple Design Team add value (value, not cost, Apple's prices aren't better today) on them devices.

Which really makes it a 12SS
Agree, only big upgrades from the 12 pro series is ProMotion and the beefier battery.

The whole smartphone industry is stagnant at the moment, you only have to look at Samsung recently, cancel the note series, then bring it back to replace the S21 series.

Only interesting thing at the moment is  silicon

Hopefully WWDC brings some fresh changes to iOS/iPadOS.

Last year WWDC was a snooze fest.

I tend to form an opinion on these phones after holding and using one not before I’m able to see it in person.
Ultimately I don’t consider smartphones pretty but they’re tools we have at our disposal to solve issues.

Funny, I love and prefer the round volume buttons. More precise and easier to toggle between.

No periscope lens please. Less moving parts the better.

Watch what you complain about. After a while it’s going to be awfully hard to make a new iphone “exciting” without some BS forced change for the sake of change. Like a completely buttonless phone. Or a zero bezel design, and I mean ZERO bezel. As in, any case will cover a fraction of the screen. Why does each year’s phone have to be so enticingly exciting?

You’re right, smartphone design did or will peak very soon. Then the awful forced change silliness will come.

The iOS 7 of iPhones has yet to be seen…. 😩
