I am having the same issue and am so glad I found this thread..(I was starting to think I got the 1/1000 lemon) See, this is my first ever iPhone but I used to play with my friends I4 which had a very responsive "clicky" home button. My 4S though feels very mushy. Now don't get me wrong, it registers but like someone previously said, it just irks me every single time i click it that unless I hit it directly in the center, it doesn't give me that 'clicky' responsive sound.

Now here's the weird thing, I took it to the apple store and they gave me a brand new model but sure enough, same exact thing..slightly mushy home button. I don't know if it's a white version thing or not but I'm about to go get another new one but in black. Sorry if I sound lame but for a phone I'm going to stick with for 2 years, I want everything to be perfect. A $500+ device shouldn't be "mushy" whatsoever.

I have a white 32GB and mine makes a noise no matter where I push the home button. Even pushing the bottom right corner makes a noise.

The white and black home buttons are the exact same material...the only thing different is the color.

People really need to start realizing that.

all different

Yes, they are all different. The ipad 2 was the first really noticeable one to have the somewhat softer touch, less click, etc. It still works fine.

I HAVE found though with this new iphone 4s, the button seems to have CHANGED a bit from the first three weeks of use. It seems that the top portion, which probably gets the most pressure seems to be going down a BIT further than when I started to use the phone. Not sure if that is just pad settling or something else.

But, it should resolve itself in a year and within that year apple will replace it.

My first 4S was very springy but the second one is mushy. Both are better than my iPhone 4 which had to be clicked at an angle to register and always felt like there was a grain of salt/sand underneath.

Part of the reasons i decided to upgrade to the 4S, since i could no longer do a warranty swap by the time the problem became egregious.

I personally don't know why Apple hasn't made the home button capacitive/touch sensitive a la iPod 3G/Android slabs.

I just unboxed my iphone today to find a particularly mushy home button that requires a long press (yes, I calibrated it) in the middle to register. Compared to my dad's iphone 4, the button feels like utter crap. Not to mention the delay between hitting it and registering an action, something that doesn't happen on my ipod touch 2g. I'm a bit disappointing.

(btw, does anyone know if verizon swaps out iphones or is everything done through apple after purchase?)

coming from a 3gs to the iphone 4s, my button feels just as good (even better) as it did on my 3gs. I had my 3gs for about 16 months.

i think people get too used to one button and think that EVERYTHING should act JUST like their previous device.

Back when Motorola Razr's were big (the flip kind not the new one) i did end up replacing mine about a year in and i felt that (even though it was the exact same model) some buttons behaved/felt different. Nothing to complain or try and replace it again for though.

ive been through so many 4S' and each one had a different home button...

some were mushy, some were clicky, some made different click sounds, some wiggled. none of them were the same. if you go to the apple store and use the floor models, you will see a HUGE variation between each home button on the i4S.

i need a hobby :(

you do . bankrupting apple one iPhone at a time :p ;):D

I took my 4S 64GB phone back to ATT because the home button was crooked - literally and was hard to push down sometimes. Sometimes, the home button would literally go a full 1/4" off center. I handed it to the ATT rep after explaining the button was askew and he asked what the problem was. I was like really? I just showed you and you're staring right at it. After 15 minutes of deciding if it was truly a defect, they gave me a refund.

I plan on ordering another when I get the money back in. I also noticed the right side of the button was sunken in so my thumb would catch the edge of the hole on the right. I am using my 4 until then and realize just how bad the 4S was. My 4 has no issues with the home button, it's flush and clicks nicely. Also doesn't turn.

I read somewhere that the home button on the 4S is different from the 4. The 4 had the button mounted on the phone chassis, whereas the 4S is mounted to the actual screen. Don't remember where I saw that though or how reliable it was.

Unless your phone is defective the click is the same from 3g to 4s. I'm betting a lot of people googling this problem are new users who still have the plastic covering their phones! peel it back guys and have a good click :)

My iPad 2 home button is solid as a rock, no wiggle, no squeaking, wish my iPhone had the same button

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Weird mine is the exact opposite it feels rock hard and sturdy in comparison to my old iPhone for. It also doesn't make the annoying click sound.
