Is it necessary to back up a Mac?

I use TM on my Mac mini. It works and has saved me from accidentally-deleted files more than a few times.

I've also got a very crude backup system between my PowerMac server and the family's XPS 410: Using iCal, the PowerMac runs an Automator workflow that copies the pictures folder from the XPS 410 onto the PowerMac.
