Is it normal that AirPods connection is poor when MacBook is in clamshell mode?

Forgive me if this is posted the wrong place, as this is about both AirPods, but also Macbook (doesn't matter if its an air or pro).

But I've noticed, when I put my Macbook in clamshell mode and have it connected to the screen, my AirPods starts to struggle with the sound if I step 5+ meters away from my computer. I thought at first, that my AirPods (Pro) had issues, but there's no problem when using them with my iPhone...

I’m having it struggle in clamshell mode when 3 feet from it, with a Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad. Maybe it’s too much?

Mine gets worse every day. When I had the new air (which I returned because I didn’t like the color and I’m planning on buying a new one in space grey) it had no issues, so maybe it’s the old model that’s the problem…
