The title sums up my question mostly.

A buyer wants me to send him a sticker that came on the box of the iMac that has the serial number on it.

Is that like a normal thing? Why would someone need that?

They need to verify date and model, and warranty remaining or eligibility for Applecare (if any) - it's pretty normal - I wouldn't buy from someone who was hiding it as it would sound fishy if not illegal (stolen maybe)

Of course you're not sending them the sticker - only a photo - right?

Ok, thanks for the reassurance. I read somewhere that someone might be able to purchase parts using my serial number or something like that, but that sounded a bit too paranoid.

Yeah, I would only be sending the photo of the sticker.

Thanks for the answers so far guys.

You can ascertain Apple warranty status, week and year of manufacture with the serial number. It's understandable that a buyer might want to double-check that info.

It used to be possible to register a Mac to your account only using its serial number, but I don't believe that's true anymore, you now have to have the ability to log into iCloud on the device in question. So there isn't much potential for abuse currently, aside from maybe serial number spoofing (on Hackintoshes).
