Guys, I bought the 256 GB model and it's displaying 232 GB capacity, and only 227 GB left (I guess 5 GB were wasted by iOS itself). What is the mathematical explanation for that?

marketing vs reality

256gb (marketed size) /1024/1024/1024 = 238 gb (actual usable space)

then 238gb minus ios and apps you get 227gb

Actually I think this is 250 GB = 232 Gibibytes

6 GB need to be accounted for, because I calculated the disk space the apps were wasting and this was at best 5, 6 GB.

No way we have 238 GB free disk space and iOS itself is wasting so much, even after you remove some apps like GarageBand, that have 1 GB each.

usable not free. 238 is for blank 256 sdd without os.

But then it is even more interested if the disk is only 250 but marketed as 256 and the actual usable size is 232 (=250/1024/1024/1024) and finally after ios you have left 232 minus 4-6gb for ios.

Before installing iOS 10 in the IPP 9.7:

Capacity: 114 GB (128 GB wifi only device)
Space left: 106 GB

After:

Capacity: 122.11 GB
Space left: 113.74 GB

************

Before:

Capacity: 232 GB (256 GB wifi + cel device)
Space left: 215 GB

After:

Capacity: 248.87 GB
Space left: 231.28 GB

I took a picture to verify how much space would iOS 10 waste, since it said 1 GB...
