sure theres hands on, and preliminary reviews, since most major publications got their unit merely a day or a couple days before launch, rather than well in advance like previous releases.

I look around for thorough updated reviews, and generally not seeing them. Screen analyses, sure. But the entire device? Its pretty sparse,

Not holding my breath, as I have an X to test drive myself right now, but ...

Especially odd that like one day after reviewers play with the device and have preliminary statements, that Apple quotes them for PR like they've had the device for weeks lol. This is the most hyped up iPhone EVER. and yet its a dull roar for news outlets. Spending more time talking about the price, and lines, and everything.

I think there are plenty of reviews available To read and Watch on YouTube. The only real reviews that matter to me are user reviews as it is.

True,

but I mean of major publications, normally they have reviews days before release when embargo is lifted.

Given they got their unit not long before the public release, lots are just reviews from like 1-2 days of experience instead of weeks.

Definitely go try one out in the store…
It's another nice iteration and a great iPhone, as they all tend to be, but some of the hyperbole is out of control for sure.

I have one in my possession, as I've mentioned im not holding my breath for reviews to form my own decision

I just find it odd how sparse the ACTUAL reviews appear to be from the usual suspects of major outlets

Im not saying you can't find people writing or talking about X, period, but we're largely reliant on the indie tech journos for insight this go round.

I'm ok with it, more power to the indie people, dont care much for media outlets conglomerates, but..

its weird for a 10th anniversary hype fest.

the 8/8+ got WAYYY more thorough reviews from the big co's than this one.

Every major technology site or newspaper organization has done a review on the X. What "major publications" don't have a review? Please list.

yes but more of a hands-on review from 2 days of use, than weeks.

a preliminary review, is what I would call a lot of these reviews.

Again, what major publications are you referring to? Can you name a few? I see and read in-depth reviews of the X all over the place including the major news networks. Also, you realize the X has only been out for six days.

The Verge updated theirs, what other publications are you waiting on? It's only been out for 5 days, and reviewers only got theirs a few days before that.

I suspect Anandtech will do one. Maybe some other truly geeky websites. But the general press has no incentive to do one. It's readers are not tech inclined they just want to know if something works and is usable. They are not interested in the nitty gritty.

Think of it this way: Your local newspaper has the basic box score of last night games. Baseball-reference.com has box scores plus a million other stats sliced, diced, and flambeed. The box score is more than enough for the casual fan and they won't pay more because they print other stats. The true "fanatic" and fantasy team afficionado demands though microscopic details.

The more interesting thing to me for anyone who simply likes to get the new hotness is:

What's really the point of the reviews?
Is there really anything (be honest now) they could say that would make you say "nah - I'm skipping the new hotness!"?

I think people that always want the latest/greatest, who want reviews, simply enjoy the validation of their decision to get one - similar to what sort of happens on the forums here also with lots of:

"Product XYZ is ammmmaaaaaazing!"
"the future is here!"
"I could never go back!"
"The home button is so antiquated"
"My eyes have bene opened!"

Give them time. You can't expect conclusive results in less than a week or two.

Reviews from Michael Fisher and Cult of Mac are out. iJustine is a homer like Ste Smith, so I don't expect rationalized statements. MKBHD takes his time with it. The Verge review is already out but Nilay only had a day to review it!

The best reviews is After the Buzz on PocketNow or maybe Nick Ackerman. Also check out JimsReviewRoom. Very well presented. As more time passes, you are not as intoxicated by its newness anymore. That new car scent, honeymoon phase buzz starts to wear off. More clarity with your opinion.

It's like watching a movie once and you enjoyed it. You watch it five more times and your opinions start to change with repeat viewings. It's not as great as that first time you saw it.

I read several articles last week that talked about how this year, unlike years in the past, Apple invited a very specific group of folks to review the phone at a location in NYC. They mentioned that this was peculiar because of the folks selected, none of them were ones who tend to be critical of Apple devices. Also, omitted were major names like WSJ and Forbes. The questioning in the article revolved around whether Apple was nervous about this release, unlike years past, and were trying to get positivity out ahead of any negativity. Folks were left with very limited amounts of time with the phone. Only now am I seeing true reviews coming out, such as one from MobileTechReview.

This article does well in talking about it.

Anandtech always takes their time, to be super thorough

Thats the one I can't wait for, but I exclude them because them taking their time isn't new to this release.

Almost every major site has updated their reviews, so not sure what you are missing. They initially posted initial reviews after only having the phone a day or so, and now have updated full reviews.

Might need to revisit them.
