I'm downloading something from the app store right now and it is really slow - my iphone just went to sleep. You think that could have messed up the download? I don't want to delete and redownload this app because I paid for it already - would I have to pay for it again if I delete it?

No, you only have to pay once. Then you can download the app as many times as you want for free. It is okay to put the iPhone to sleep while you're downloading apps... I do it all the time.
