Very improbable for most situations, but anything is possible. Since you said it wasn't cracked before, it was obviously the heat that caused it. Essentially the screen stretches from the heat, and if it is enough, you get a crack. Just how hot was it?

Was the heat from being inside a car?

Apple says the iPhone will be ok in temperatures up to 113° F. The inside of a hot car in the summer can get up to 200° F, so if that's what happened then yeah, I'd say it's very likely the heat is the cause.

If that's the case I'm surprised they'd replace it though. Am I missing something?

Yeah, I guess Apple forgot to put in a heat sensor to go along with the water sensors. :)

Enough heat and not enough room for the glass to expand. Yes it will crack.

You mean the iPhone screen will crack under excessive heat? Which model? iPhone classic, 3G or 3GS?

All of them will as all of them use glass.
