Haven’t heard this rumor, but I’d love to see it. And I would be willing to pay a premium for sapphire front glass.

I would think the technology has matured enough to make it possible by new, years after the GT Advanced fiasco.

It's difficult to predict exactly what features the iPhone 15 Ultra will have, as Apple typically keeps their plans and developments under wraps until they are ready to release a new product. However, there have been rumors and speculations in the past that Apple may be considering using sapphire glass for the front screen of future iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Ultra. Sapphire glass is known to be extremely durable and scratch-resistant, making it a desirable option for high-end smartphones. As for the camera system, it's possible that the iPhone 15 Ultra may have an upgraded camera system with new features and improvements, but it's too early to say for certain what those features may be. We'll have to wait and see what Apple has in store for the iPhone 15 Ultra.

No, because sapphire is the opposite of what Corning makes. It's like asking if Apple is going to use a plastic chassis on the iPhone 15.

Gorilla Glass is soft which makes it shatter resistant. As mentioned above, sapphire is brittle.

I very much doubt it as sapphire crystal is far too brittle in drops. It is different on a watch screen as its unlikely to be dropped.

When you consider the softer glass currently used is used in conjunction with a screen protector by the vast majority of iPhone users, having a sapphire crystal display is expensive and unnecessary,
Do many people use a screen protector? I don’t and haven’t seen any on anyone else’s phone in a while. I haven’t found it necessary as long as you don’t put your phone and keys in the same pocket. 😊

Nearly everyone I know uses one. I see it as unnecessary not to use one considering they are invisible on the front of the phone and usually a harder glass than the actual phone screen. You’d be surprised how easily the screen scratches just going in and out of a pocket without keys and coins. I made that mistake in the few days I had my iPhone 12 before the screen protector arrived. I wasn’t at all impressed with the quality to be honest.

No. Way too much risk of sapphire front cracking.
On the watch it’s a much smaller glass screen, the smaller the area the less flex upon a drop and less chance of a crack, the iPhone screens are so big the flex would be too much for sapphire, would shatter straight away

There’s no telling. I would still put a screen protector on the top of it no matter what. And also no need to call it the 15 ultra because we don’t know if that’s going be the name or not.

For how much we pay for these chinese built devices they should have sapphire standard

Based on watches I’ve owned, sapphire is very very strong, and if it wasn’t for the ultra having sapphire I wouldn’t have a Apple Watch

Sapphire is hard and resist scratches but it is much more likely to crack and shatter when dropped and the toughened “gorilla glass” that Apple uses. Sapphire is more expensive and less transparent than glass.

For a small display like the watch where scratching is more likely than dropping, it makes sense but not on a phone.

I don’t know of anything other than a egg that’s more prone to cracks than the junk they make the expensive iPhone screens out of

Go ahead and show us a production method of producing enough Sapphire to cover millions of units per quarter (let alone processing them into screens).

You can’t, because sapphire production at the scale required for the iPhone line simply doesn’t exist on the planet.

I just think for a 4 figure price point I should be able to expect better

Many watch makers have their own type of sapphire like lenses, I just accept Apple can’t make a screen that isn’t so weak

Gorilla Glass

Any glass, sapphire or otherwise can crack if you drop it on the concrete.

If Apple were to give you a sapphire screen, it would be more likely to crack than Gorilla Glass does.

Yeah I’m just not buying it

I’ve had some HARD hits on sapphire watches and never seen a scratch, I’ve dropped iPhone under 12” into soft surfaces and had them crack

“Gorilla glass” needs to be named “eggshell glass”

Watches and phones are very different scenarios Due to the size and thickness.

Having said that, it is clear that you are not interested in the facts. If you just want to vent about dropping your phone, go ahead. I’m no longer following this thread.

Im game, got a comparison based on size?

You are kidding, right? Admittedly, smartphones have struggled with screen breakages in the past but the last few years have seen massive improvements. It used to be common to see people with broken screens on phones but I've not seen anyone with a broken phone screen for probably four years now. Not just talking about iPhones but any smartphones.
