When I change my account name (Users and Groups>Advanced Options), will it damage anything? I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5. Thanks.

I use Time Machine to back up my MBP and will be upgrading to a rMBP soon. I was wondering, if I change the name of the home directory on my MBP and then use the same name for the user account name on my new rMBP, will the backed up data on Time Machine associated with the old user account name be able to transfer to the new rMBP?

Sorry if this is a confusing question. And I didn't want to create a new thread because this is related to the OP's question.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to change the user name on the MBP then import that data to the rMBP once you buy it? Yes, as long as you change the name correctly like explained i the article above that will work. The change will be adopted by the Time Machine backup.

The key is when you open your new machine do not setup and account on it at all. At the end of the setup process when you pick a language and time zone etc, just use the Migration Assistant and point it to your Time Machine backup to import your data. This will setup the old account and all its data on the new machine for you.
