I want to see for myself before I buy iMac the screen issues people have been discussing. Is it possible to check these in store? Or are the display units generally free of these defects? Also, what would be the best way to test these issues in store?

every store i go to i have looked for gradient issues and have yet to find one, but they do exist. I asked a rep at the UW apple store and he said he has seen a couple. I guess its really obvious, so you wouldn't miss it.

You can look, but you might not see backlighting issues due to store lighting. Stuck pixels and dead pixels need a solid background color to check properly. You will most likely have to download the needed backgrounds to the mac.

Buy a Mac Pro and pick any screen you want.

I went to a best buy store and I found the picture people have been using to check the gradient issue and I didn't see any gradient issue on the in-store model. I did see back light bleeding on the very edges though. I didn't get to see a fully black screen to see what other kind of backlighting issues might come up but the backlighting issues on the edges I can deal with because the rest of the machine seems so fantastic.

Still I haven't ruled out a windows machine yet.
