So, I'm wondering if it's possible to format a regular 2.5" 1TB with the same software an iPod uses in order to make it sync with iTunes and car radios?

If you searched, you would know 2.5" drives are physically larger than the whole iPod classic.

    Second, they use different connectors.

depends upon which ipod you use.
    e.g.,
iPOD classic has HDD, but connector & technology is different..
    it uses pata (please check),
if you have proper connector, may be you can restore from iTune and then format your 1 TB HDD.
    Its worth trying..
Let me know once you have done that...

I never said I was going to attempt to put the HD into an iPod.

Secondly, I was going to use a USB to SAE connector for the connection difference.

In theory for this to work, do i need to retain anything from an iPod or could I just use a regular HD by itself?

The HD by itself is just an HD. The iPod includes a processor and other electronics that make a HD into an iPod.

Is there anyway to tether the key components to effectively turn it into a high cap iPod? I don't need an audio jack or screen.. Just the ability to connect the iPod to a car stereo via USB.
