I've been researching and trying to downgrade from ios6 to iOS 5.1.1

I've gone through the steps of downloading the proper file and clicking restore with the option key held and selecting the file. I always get a message "your device is not eligible". I've also tried editing my hosts file, but get the same message.

I've also read that I need my SHSH blobs. Is this correct? I sync my iPhone every day but I don't think I've saved these "blobs". Since the blob files are unique to each iPhone, would I be able to do the downgrade? Are the "blobs" saved anywhere automatically when I sync my iPhone?

So, basically I really want to downgrade because I want maps back and my iPhone 4 seems slower on ios6. I called Apple and they said it's "impossible". I would never have done this if I thought I couldn't go back. Can I downgrade without getting too "messy"?

Thanks in advance...

Even if you had a Blob I believe it does not work very well. At least thats what I have read.

If you don't have one then it is not possible to downgrade for sure. No Blob = No downgrade.

Thanks for the replies. So, doing a normal sync and backing up through this sync does not save a blob?

Is there a way to have Apple or the carrier do the downgrade? I am really upset about this.

I know there are other things I should probably be worrying about, but this one really gets to me.

I truly feel this is part of Apple's conspiracy. To get people to buy new phones even when the one they have is fine. An iPhone 4 on iOS 5.1.1 would be good for quite some time...

Blobs are not created as part of the Apple Backup/Sync process. They are specifically made as part of jailbreak.

There is no way to get Apple, or a Carrier to do it.

It is not a conspiracy. If it was, they would force you to upgrade. It is a choice, that you made.

There is a variety of reason they do not want to let people go backwards. Conspiracy is not one of them.

Is it possible to force the downgrade if I jailbreak the phone now?

No. You need a blob from 5.1.1. Basically the phone "Phones Home" to Apple to activate. It requires Apple to approve the activation to keep the phone secure. Apple will not activate downgrades basically. It will only activate the last version you activated or "better" it wont go backwards.

Having a Blob from BEFORE an upgrade allows you to trick the system through a Hack. But you have to have it BEFORE.

Its not happening dude. Sorry to be blunt, but give up. No blob = no chance.

My wife's 3GS really played up when she upgraded to iOS 5. We went to Apple store and they eventually gave her a new phone with iOS 4 on. The downgrade was impossible, they say. We had AppleCare though.

I have Apple Care so ill ask for a new phone. The new phones still have iOS 5.1.1 though and how would it work with my profile? I'd have to reinstall all apps?

You will have to reinstall the apps yes.

BUt they aren't going to just give you a new phone because you don't like the upgrade. You are going to have to at least exhibit a behavior that isn't operating the way it should be.... and even after that they might just say the OS needs to be reinstalled first to narrow it down to an issue they cannot fix.

You can't even be sure you are going to get one with 5.1.1 on it. iOS 6 has been out long enough now that Refurbs can possibly have 6 on it anyway.

why won't Apple allow down grades to 5.1.1, with so many people with an IP4 saying that ios6 doesn't run properly surely Apple need to come up with a plan to allow 5.1.1 to be reinstalled !
