I have just noticed my week old iPhone has a scratch on the bezel despite being ultra careful and having it in a bumper. All I can think of is a tiny bit of grit must have got under the bumper. Only noticed it when I took it off to fit a screen protector.

I've been using Sharpie too for lack of a better solution. Like the others said it rubs off.

Anyone tried anything else?

I used the Birchwood Casey "Aluminum Black". This is NOT the paint pen, but the blackening fluid, there's a big difference. The Alum Blk actually oxidizes the surface in a matter similar to the original anodizing. Short answer, it worked perfectly on a small nick in the bezel. I would post a pic but there is simply nothing to see. Longer answer, I would be very careful using this method, as the fluid is extremely corrosive. I hate to think what even a tiny amount of fluid would do to sensitive micro-circuits. I used a toothpick to dab a tiny amount on the nick, then neutralized the area with a small amount of clean water. End result, I am very happy. The patch does not want to rub back off at all, and is for all intense and purpose invisible. I would not want to risk doing this too often, however, and I have used this solution before.

Just like the iphone 4/4S I think there will be parts available to replace the back whenever you want.

If you shattered the back of your iphone 4 it would only cost less than $50 to replace and repair through an outside repair shop (not apple direct)

I just ordered the Birchwood Casey "Aluminum Black" (bottle not pen). I'll post an update once I get it.

The 5 is a unibody design. Back and sides are one piece, so no easy back replacement as on the 4/4S

Like with my car, if theres ever a scratch I break out my buffer!

If you can get a jewelers small buffer that they use for jewelery, you prob could handle any scratch.

How about for the Apple logo on the white iPhone 5?

Just noticed a nice little scratch that drags upwards smack dab in the middle of the Apple logo to the top-left end of the logo.

Obviously all these links for black Sharpies & black touch up paint won't fly for a white iPhone.

Anyone?

How'd this end up working?

These are horrible - the finish isn't the same at all. I ended up picking it all off again and throwing the pen away lol.

Are scratches really visible on the white iPhones chrome edge? Thought it wasn't painted like the black one.

It is indeed painted - but obviously being silver/chrome it isn't as instantly noticeable as the black on silver.

Mine has 4 or 5 nicks in various places but you don't really 'see' them without looking for too long.

Easy!

My mother has had her Cayenne for 6 years now, that's 6 years I've been in and out of that car and never once have I seen the top of the car. Can you share the practical reason for applying paint on top if you never look there?

Most helicopter pilots are aestheticians as well in their spare time and a nicely painted car roof pleases them immensely.

You don't want a guy flying a blackhawk with tomahawk missiles underneath to see your scratched roof and get an itchy trigger finger.

Is it possible to fix scratches in the black iPhone 5 coating?

I might be bumping an old thread but I found out here about the liquid birchwood casey aluminum black so I ordered and it did a perfect job for the little ding on the chamfered edge.
