Is it possible to install MacOS Tahoe on an external SSD?

I would want to install Tahoe on an external SSD to make some test and check how would it run on my MBA.

Since I don't have enough space on my internal SSD I'm wondering if I can install it on an external one using a standalone USB installer while keeping my internal SSD with sequoia. But... Is it possible to?

It is definitely possible.
I have it installed on a Samsung T7, for the same reason you state (testing).

The way I did it was from my Mac Studio recovery screen.
I selected to reinstall MacOS (Sequoia) and selected the T7.
Once installed booted to that drive and upgraded to Tahoe from system settings.

Yes.

I have tahoe running on a 2.5" SATA SSD (only 128gb!) in a USB3 external enclosure.

It boots a little more slowly than it would if installed onto a faster internal SSD, but once running, it's fine.

Don't over think this.
Just... do it...

I would, however, recommend using at least a 256gb SSD...

I installed Tahoe in a Samsung T7 last night. 🙂

It takes a little longer to boot, but after that it really rocks! Pretty amazing!
