Is it possible to Jailbreak and still keep your texts and settings?

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to know if it was possible after Jailbreaking the iPhone 3G on 2.0.1 to restore it back with an old backup. I don't want to lose all my texts, app settings, general settings, and I heard while jailbreaking you need to start the iPhone as a new phone in iTunes.

yeah, just jailbreak normally, and when you plug your iphone back into itunes, it will ask you to restore from backup or set up as a new phone
