I have checked online for details and all seems confusing, i was given an iPhone 4 which is on iOS 5.1 baseband 04.12.01 and locked to AT&T.

Whats i what is either able to unlock the phone on that iOS 5.1 or upgrade to 6.1.2 and still able to unlock it.

Please if possible a little detail or link will be well appreciated.

NB: just read 6.1.2 is currently not being signed, so which iOS can i upgrade to and still able to unlock it?

The only option to unlock that phone is an IMEI unlock from AT&T or an after market vendor.

Changing the iOS will not allow you to unlock it (except as above - IMEI unlock)

    Question, slightly off-topic.

A lot of people seem to assume that to get their phone unlocked they have to jailbreak. Where did this assumption come from?

I've only been using iPhones since Dec. 2011 and jailbreaking/unlocking was common by that time. So any prehistory on this I'm not aware of.

Just curious why people would think this when $3 unlocks have been available on eBay for quite some time (not so much now, but earlier).

Is it possible to jailbreak/unlock my phone?

Because before the IMEI unlocks and SIM interposers there was only a software unlock like ultrasn0w

    Oh, ok. Thanks!

I guess my real question then, is that if the IMEI unlocks and SIM interposers have been around for some time, WHY do people still think they need to jailbreak first.

Never mind though, that question is rhetorical. Thanks for the answer!

Because of numerous (out of date in many cases) posts still lingering on the web in the form of videos, tutorials and blog posts about how to unlock an iPhone.
Plus, many are too cheap to pay for an IMEI unlock or buy a phone before doing adequate research on whether it can even be unlocked.

Yeah, that's what I was assuming. Same story when it comes to asking about a jailbreak for iOS 7.

People can't be bothered to do their thinking for themselves!
