is it possible to remove rotation lock icon by SSH

I suppose you could, but I dont know how the other icon would behave.
You might end up being left with a gap where the lock icon should be, which would make deleting it useless.

carl, that space is often used by status-notifier for a litany of things, it gets pretty crowded sometimes alerts wont appear if they are out of room. i leave the phone portrait locked so i dont need the lock sb notification

interesting, might take some digging in the file structure, i'll have a look later.
Do you use SBSettings? You can use Rotation Inhibitor (SBSettings toggle) instead of the Apple rotation lock.

Ahh yes I understand now, I'm on my phone waiting for power to come back (hurricane passing 120mi from me, full 3G signal but slow!) and in my head though you meant the new icon in the multitaskbar next to the ipod controls! How silly of me!!! Let me know the mods you do if successful since I would like to do it also (3icons is the max for me up there, can't stand more) and if it messes or crashes the springboard after toggling it!)

Guaynabo, Puerto Rico! I just got back power a few hours ago, even though it was 100mi from me the wind blew some branches onto the power lines😡!
oh, okay. i live in Salem, New Hampshire. So the power must have gone out for some other reason.
