Hi. Just wondering if it's possible to sell anywhere on these forums. I have a couple of old iMacs and a Mini from 2007 I'm trying to sell.

Thanks in advance.

MacRumors does have a Marketplace where users can buy and sell items, however IIRC for security reasons and to prevent scams, you have to have 250 posts or more to gain access to it, which is equal to the "MacRumors 6502" user title.

Once you get to 250 posts/comments and get the 6502 title (given automatically when you hit that number), you will be able to access it. This is what it looks like on the Forum homepage (I've got nearly 900 posts and can therefore access it):

@jeffmr4:

There are two requirements which must be met before you can have access to the Marketplace: You must have made a specific number of posts, and - for, this is an and - you must have been a member of the forum for a specific period of time.

1: As @theMarble has already explained, you must have made 250 posts in order to be admitted to the Marketplace forum.

And:

2: You must have been a member of the forum for 180 days - sic months - before you will be admitted to the Marketplace forum.

Now, you joined the forum in December 2020, which means that you most certainly meet the second requirement.

Therefore, all that remains is to increase your post count.

Was the post requirement raised to 250 in recent years? I feel like it was much lower (50-100) before, but I have been on many forums with classifieds/marketplaces so I could simply be mistaken.

As long as I've been a member here (nearly 3 years), it has been 250 posts.

According to the Internet Archive, it has been like this (250 posts + 6 months) since at least 2016.

Only 246 to go.....
I had no idea I had hit the required amount. Now the problem is that I'm not based in the US and even when someone is selling something from within Europe, it's still very expensive depending on the country!

Now, seriously, I find it ridiculous that valuable members, like you, micahgartman, who keeps PowerBook documentation online for others to use, or someone, who only posts now and then and only serious stuff, have to "earn" their right to access marketplace with the number of posts, whereas tools, fanboys and parrots with their watches, phones and whatnot, who mostly post rubbish, probably start hawking their warez there on the 181st day.

It’s unfortunate that the requirements are so high. I had a huge stash of polycarb MacBooks that went to eBay but I was going to look for interested folks here first. I still have a huge stash of 2008/09 20 inch iMacs that need homes too. 200 posts will take a looong time.

The mods here do not interfere when a member makes a thread offering to give away items, even if you ask a member to pay for shipping. The actual details concerning shipping are usually done via DM however.

I've picked up several old Macs and parts in my time here because they were offered free via threads in this subforum.

It's when you SELL outside of the marketplace that the mods have a problem.

Moderator Note:

That is actually not allowed under the Marketplace Rules.

All offers of items for sale or trade, or for free, or asking to buy or receive items must be posted in a Marketplace forum and are subject to these rules.

The smart move by site owners would be to split the marketplace into several, with different requirements for each.
Higher post count for gadgets (everyone has an iPhone), lower for people who deal with obsolete technology and try to keep their machines running - 68k, PPC, early Intel Macs.

But I also understand the owners - the more traffic you have, the more revenue you can generate.

No, it wasn't.

For what it is worth, I joined the forum in 2008, - all of 15 years ago - and the post requirement for access to the marketplace has always - at least, ever since I joined - been twofold: You must have 250 posts and - that is, and, - you must have been a member for 180 days, in other words, six months.

Now, where the confusion possibly lies is that you may be confusing it - requirements for access to the marketplace - with the post requirement for access to the erstwhile PRSI forum, which is no longer with us: While it still existed, in order to obtain access to PRSI, you needed 100 posts.

I suspect that the reason the post requirement is so high is to stave off spammers, and dodgy stuff.

In any case, I think that the theory was that if someone had been around for six months, posting relatively regularly, that others on the forum would have had a chance to get to know them - even if only virtually - and that this would serve to give some credibility to their posts, to their online persona, and would serve to persuade others on the forum that this sale offer was serious and could be trusted.

For that matter, I very much doubt that MR would have wished to get a reputation as being a haven or platform for dodgy marketplace practices.

Do you have any thoughts on why threads for free stuff in the PowerPC forum have been overlooked by the mods over the years? I'm not questioning the rules and going forward I will advise others differently. I'm just wondering why posts to sell were quickly removed, but posts for free stuff were not.

If that is not an appropriate question and/or the answer would be inappropriate then I withdraw the question.

My only guess is that this particular subforum has been largely an out of the way section of MacRumors until fairly recently.

That would be my guess also. I don't think any of the mods post much in that forum, so it probably just slipped by unnoticed.

If frequent posters there like yourself were not aware it was against the rules, there would have been nothing reported either, so making it even more likely to slide by.
