Is it possible to set Apple Remote to not wake the display?

Ahoy,

Is it possible to set the Apple remote to not wake up the screen when it is used to change a track or adjust volume?

My situation is this, I have iTunes playing and some other things going in the background but I'm not at my MBP so I turn off the display (hot corner). All is good until I use the remote to do something because it wakes up the screen, which I don't want to do.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
