Shouldn't be too difficult and could save a lot of money.

(If this is common knowledge then I apologize - I am new to Apple world)

There was an app available for a short while called NetShare. It is no longer available in the App Store.

Here is a method using a Jailbroken iPhone

yes, it is possible. You will have to jailbreak you iPhone though, and then install a program on it to allow you to do so. Some of the software costs money about $30-$50 I believe. You can find more info in the jail breaking section

So are you looking to tether the 3G signal to you notebook? This is possible by using this guide. You iPhone has to be jailbroken to do so, though.
