It would really depend on where you are but arriving at 7:30 and expecting to be out in 2 hours doesn't seem likely. By that time the line could already be really long and you would wait for hours. I live in central Kentucky. Last year I arrived at midnight and there were 20-30 people in front of me. I still managed to get out of the store with my phone by 8:30, but I guarantee anyone that got there at 7:30 arrived to a line wrapped around the side of the mall and waited longer than 2 hours. You'll probably need to go earlier than you are planning to, otherwise don't bet on getting out by 9:30.

Am I the only chump who has an Apple Store in a mall that has security which absolutely does not allow lines to form before 6:00AM? I showed up, along with many others, at midnight for the 5S last year, and within 5 minutes the security had arrived and sent us home. By 5:30AM there were 30 cars right at the door with everyone sitting in them waiting to be allowed to queue up.

But aren't there tons of employees on deck, so that multiple customers are being processed at a time? Why is it so slow?

Finding the correct phone for the customer, checking them out, personal setup, trying to sell you on accessories....it's slower than you think.

Do you recall the pre-order line moving faster at all and was it just as long as the walk-in?

My only line experience was for the iPhone 4, and I'd say that for every 8 or 9 people in the pre-order/reservation line that went in the store, one person from the walk-in line went in.

I went to the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 launches. Both at a mall. For the 4, I arrived about 6 and got out at 9:45 (that year they took reservations which made it a little quicker). For the 5, I arrived around 6:30 and got out around 10:30. I think 2 hours in line won't be long enough, but it probably won't take all day.

If you get there at 730 am and leave with a phone at all count yourself lucky.

I think this largely depends on what model you want. It doesn't seem like there will be iPhone 6 shortages to me. You can still order certain models from carriers for 9/19 delivery. Even if you don't get one Friday, I'm willing to bet walk-ins next week won't have too many issues for a 6.

If you want a plus... well that's a different matter.

I'll be waiting outside the mall for the AT&T store here in Trumbull Connecticut. The mall doors will open between 6 and 7 AM, the AT&T store at 8 AM. They will be going down the line handing out tickets for what you want.
We are a family of three and it looks like all three of us are going for the plus. I want this 64 Gold plus. My bro the gold plus 128, IDK what my boyfriend is going to get.
I am going to call the mall security once again. The other night when I called them they said I could arrive hours early and sit outside the door. If it was quiet and people weren't acting foolish. I hope they haven't changed their minds.
There are a lots of stores selling the six here in Fairfield County.

Unfortunately because my brother is in California we have to pick up his phone without activating it.
We have a special note in our account we can only go to the AT&T store to fill his order or else I just go right down the road to RadioShack.

The point is very simple, it is very depends on where you live. If you live in major cities, you should go like right now and maybe order a large pizza to go along with you.
If you live in smaller cities, show up around midnight. If you don't wanna rush at launch day, then wait until next week, show up at like 5am, you should be good to go.

Will the demand be any lighter Saturday morning? Spending the night in line seems absolutely ludicrous to me.

You still gonna be there early if there is anything left from Friday or maybe they will restock, who knows.
If you want a comfy "pickup," try pick up at store or wait until 1 week later.

For the iPhone 4 launch I stood in line from 3 am and didn't get done until after 12. They had a weird ratio of allowing people into the store. There was a line for reserved in store items and walk in. For every 5 reserves they let one of us in. It was pure torture. Then again, this was just my store.
