my wife had a kindle keyboard, but since we upgraded to the new iPad we sold that bc she didn't use it all that much. Only downside I see though, if you use Amazon Prime and want to read free books you can't do that on the iPad app...you MUST own a kindle. Now if you read books daily...you may want to keep a kindle around. We just didn't use the kindle that much to justify having both devices around since we like to keep things simple.

Not true at all... I "bought" 3 free books tonight. I did have to go into my amazon account and send them to my iPad. But it wasn't a problem. I'll have to do the same thing if I want them on my iPhone.

amazon prime owner's library is what i meant....

you have to have an actual kindle device to be able to do that. We sold our kindle a few weeks back and wife found the Hunger Games on amazon prime library to read for free. She was all excited...then realized she couldn't read it on the iPad unless she actually bought it or still had her kindle.

I enjoy reading regular books on my Nook. Magazines and some books with illustrations are better on the iPad. I find the iPad too heavy to read for hours at a time.

I had a new Kindle Touch in February that was given to me as a gift. A month later I put in a pre-order for an iPad 3. Soon as I got the iPad 3, after a week, I sold my Kindle Touch to family. Haven't regretted it at all. Because 99% of my reading now days is online, especially after the discovery of Instapaper (how did I exist for so long without using this?!?!?!?!), the Kindle didn't seem like much of a loss.

Yes, the Kindle reading experience is pretty good, its far easier to hold in your hand for hours and hours (I read with iPad 3 on lap with legs folded), eyes don't hurt after 4+ hours of reading - especially if you like to read outside. But the iPad 3 is so sharp and the utility is far more. I don't look back.

That said, if I wasn't looking to recoup the iPad 3 costs so much (had to get one for the wifey too) - I'd probably have kept my Kindle as I don't get distracted as easily with it as I do with my iPad 3 (iMessages, wife has me hooked on Dragonvale for now, ugh!).

I've had a kindle 2 since its release (love it). I used it everyday............... I picked up an iPad2 about a month ago and haven't turned on my kindle since then. Yes, the e-ink is easier to read, and the kindle is lighter BUT I can do so much more with my iPad I just can't seem to remember to ever pickup my kindle. I go back and forth with reading books (kindle app), comics and manga. So the iPad is for me, but I won't get rid of my kindle2.

I don't think it's redundant to have both. I own both an iPad and Fire. I love the Amazon ecosystem, i'm a Prime Member and love their free app everyday. One device runs iOS and the other is Android.

I have both a Kindle and an iPad. I never read books on my iPad; the Kindle is lighter and easier on my eyes.

I have the new ipad and I know I could just use the kindle app, but the real kindle's size, weight, e ink and battery life keep calling to me. The current touch model particularly, since they did away with that ugly keyboard and you can focus on content.

Also I live in manhattan so I could see myself throwing it in my bag to read on the subway, whereas I'm not going to read on a huge expensive tablet while I'm elbow to elbow with bums and weirdos.

I just hesitate because I don't want to spoil myself with too much technology at once and end up barely using any of it, if that makes sense. Kindle + iPad owners weigh in?

I also live in the city, but would not get a kindle. The ipad is still small enough to read sitting on a crowded train, and is a far more powerful, better product.

My kids each got a kindle touch for the holidays, and i have an ipad 3 - and there is no comparison. The kindle is very limited and frustrating to use IMO, and a lot of the apps for the kindle fire, etc. cannot also be used on the touch.

You are also tied to the amazon site, which is another huge negative. What if amazon goes out of business (admittedly a long shot).

I would strongly NOT recommend a kindle, get a refurb ipad 2 from here:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

The 32GB wifi 2nd gen is a steal at $399.

which might be the best price/value offer available.

I have a kindle fire and a third generation iPad. I used to kindle fire while I'm at work, where more damage might occur. But when I'm at home it's all iPad. The Kindle fire is much smaller and easier to pack into my lunch cooler. So it is perfect for work. Plus it's $200 versus $700 so if I broke the Kindle fire at work, I would not feel near as bad as if I broke the iPad at work.

I know its been a few months since this post, but the ipad 2 refurb 16 GB is $319, i might grab one for the wife/kids or the 32 GB for another $80.

Its why I think the ipad is a better option; I loved the ipad 2 and with the refurb pricing is a steal now.

Kindle is so much better for serious reading and the interface on the Touch makes it a pleasure to use. Its probably as light as most paperbacks too!

I have both. I use the kindle outdoors in the sun etc, and I bought it for just 100$ so I don't have to worry about losing it/dropping it as I do with my 64Gb iPad.

This is not true. I converted my epub library using software called Calibre, and now I can read all my books on the Kindle.

Wirelessly posted

I have both. Mainly because of the size of the kindle and the free books you get with prime(free prime books not available on Kindle app)

I also own both. I love my iPad but after viewing an LCD monitor all day at work, my eyes thank me for switching to e-ink if I'm going to be doing any serious novel reading. For anything else, I grab the iPad first.

I have both, yet find myself doing little with the Kindle other than keeping it charged and books loaded on it. I tend to pull it out if I want to do some reading outside but that's it.

Most of my books are loaded via Calibre so they don't sync with other devices when read on the Kindle whereas they do if I read them via iBooks. So I tend to do most of my reading on my iPhone/iPad.

That said, I still love my Kindle and am glad to have it.
