I have not yet upgraded to Snow Leopard because of all the negative things about it. But I am wondering now, with all the application updates, 10.6.1 and other Apple updates, is it "safe" to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I am really looking forward to all the new features, but am happy with Leopard right now. Thanks!

10.5.8 is stable and everything works with it. Snow Leopard 10.6.1 is very far away from being robust and mature.

If you need a working machine to get things done, do NOT upgrade to Snow Leopard yet.

Snow Leopard currently sucks even more than Leopard sucked when it was released. Leopard became usable with the 10.5.2 update. The way it looks right now, Snow Leopard won't be really usable before the next couple of updates.

Or it's not buggy and crashy and crappy. :D

Eh? I don't get what you mean.

Perhaps you'd prefer me to say "It's still to buggy and crashy and crappy for me". But then, as it was me who wrote that based on my own opinions and experiences, I'm sure you knew that already.

But the OP has a very good chance of not having any problems upgrading to Snow Leopard, hence my reply to your post. That's why I gave my advice to go for it but make sure they've got a clone ready in case anything goes wrong.

I had endless issues with 10.5, every time I updated versions(.6/.7/.8) I would have to do a time camsule restore cause it would crash the OSX.
I installed 10.6 2 weeks ago, had my doubts but happy to report everything works just fine, not one crash(which happened often enough with 10.5) :)

a clean install of SL a few weeks ago and not one problem..in fact...safari and quicktime are way faster..

Only reason I'm not happy with my Snow Leopard is that MultiClutch doesn't work fully with it yet.
Other than that, I've been with SL since 10.6 thru 10.6.1 now, and have had almost no problems and running most of my programs flawlessly :)

I've put SL on a MBP, MBA, and a Mac Mini. No negatives yet. It has a lot of very nice features that were worth the small upgrade costs.

Just make sure that the particular applications you use are supported.

Include me in the "no problems" group. I did make a clone of my Leopard install first just in case, but everything has worked smoothly on my early 2008 MBP and my current model Mac Mini, so I can erase my clone of Leopard.

There were a few programs I have that weren't completely compatible when I upgraded, but they still worked for what I needed. They have since been upgraded and are compatible now.

So I say make the clone using CarbonCopy and then upgrade your main drive. If the upgrade doesn't work out, it is easy to revert back. If it does, then you can erase the clone.

yes

There's something wrong with your machine...

I'm not the only one with problems - look around the forums.

Or are you suggesting I take it back to an Apple store? Do you have any idea what might be wrong (so I have something to tell the Genius)? Seems odd you say there's something wrong with my MBP when it works fine with Leopard - all the problems started with SL so I assumed it was that, but maybe you know better than me.

If you are like me and use and like Office 2004 then Snow Leopard may not be a good idea right now.

I haven't upgraded because I've read of lots of problems with Office 2004 and Snow Leopard.

my new umbp came pre-loaded with snow leopard, i was a little disappointed as i wanted leopard pre-installed. snow leopard didnt work as well with my old santa rose mbp. however with the umbp, it works flawlessly! i find it way better than leopard! i had issues with ichat giving me communication errors everytime i tried a video chat under the old machine but it works fine with the new machine. so i guess it depends on your hardware too in a way.

It's a Good Thing all those people with no problem don't post here and say "works for me. I'd hate to have to read million post long threads. People only speak up if there is a problem.

That said just look at the software and drivers on your system. What do you use. If you have (say) an audio interface from M-Audio and they have not yet got an SN compatible drive on their web site then wait until they do. Same if you have an older graphic tablet or whatever. Check for drivers. But if the only hardware device you have is an iPod then SN is OK for you. So take an inventory and think about what' on YOUR Mac.

THere really are not many user-facing new features

I have to call BS on this.

I'm sorry but I have not had one issue with SL. So to say it sucks period is BS.

What would be more correct to say is that it sucked for you. However YMMV

Yes. Do it.

I agree. The Kool-Aid is extra delicious! Drink!! All of it.

But seriously, no, don't do it. Wait until 10.6.2, and preferably wait until 10.6.2 or higher is on the retail DVD. There are plenty of problems and if you are happy on 10.5.8, why don't you stay that way.

I've been dragged back to Snow Leopard. Which means I can't use my Tom Tom software and my browsers crash whenever uploading anything. :(

Haven't had a problem yet with SL .. it's quite stable. There are, of course, the usual problems with 3rd party app developers not updating their apps to work with SL, but that's not Apple's problem.

SL seems quite stable to me, no perceivable issues whatsoever. Most apps that I use have been updated for SL compatibility at this point.

According to tibi08 Snow Leopard is faultless and the problem must be with your machine.

No matter WHAT version of any software you install, there will always be plenty of problems. The only issue is whether the user in question will be able to find them.

Snow Leopard is running just fine for me, but it came pre-installed on my new MacBook Pro. ;)

It wasn't "safe" from day one?

I did a clean install and have had no problems at all. No instability, no crashes, no funkiness.

My only quibble? They changed the row select in list view. I hate the full row select. I preferred the way it was in Leopard where only the filename would select the row. Oh well.
