I think this whole thread has turned into a bunch of misinformation by fan boi's on both sides.

As of right now, Blu-Ray is winning the format war. So, I'd recommend you do one of two things.

1. Buy a Blu-Ray player and hope it wins OR...
2. Wait a year and see who the true winner is.

Duff-man says...the winner in this 'format war' will be whatever the porn industry decides :D - not that I really care. I personally will not buy either until they decide on *one* format. This petty bickering over formats was already partially (or mostly) responsible for the non-acceptance of the competing high-end audio formats (sacd vs dvd-a) - have these people not learned their lesson yet...agree on a format and they will come...split the market and they will wait....oh yeah!

no HD DVD players will be able to play these discs!

Third-generation HD DVD players are firmware upgradable to support the 51 GB format.

Last I heard, Sony was being devious and including PS3 games in their Blu-ray sales figures. I don't know whether they still do this or not, but it's worth bearing in mind. As mentioned previously, HD DVD is winning by a significant margin in Europe, and for me an NZ$249 HD DVD drive vs a $1199 Blu-ray player was really a no-brainer.

Bottom line- neither one offers anything all that special other than more storage capacity. Picture quality is negligible when compared with a regular HDMI upload from a standard DVD- unless you sit one foot from your TV screen. These formats need to offer a lot more, or they'll both lose.

Couldn't have said it better.

sorry to break it to you, but sony released this in a press conference....

Quote: "Sony has announced that sales of Blu-ray titles in Europe are exceeding sales of HD DVD titles by a factor of 4-to-1. This decisive lead has forced studios such as Universum Film (Germany) and Studio Canal (France) to plan Blu-ray releases for this important Q4. Additionally, sales of standalone players has nearly caught up with HD DVD, reflecting a similar trend in the US where sales of Blu-ray players has surpassed that of HD DVD players."

im not a fany boy, but an educated purchaser

of course for you its a no brainer...thats what they are going for when they discount the prices. unfortunately you will end up paying more in the long run, but fortunately you are driving down my prices

Please link your source. That word "titles" (rather than "movies") may indicate that they're bundling in PS3 games again, so I'd like to read the whole thing.
