The Volume Overlay in iOS can be intrusive, especially on iPhones where screen real estate is limited! It has remained largely unchanged through many iterations of iOS and it feels outdated. Alert style notifications in iOS 10 have been moved to the top of the screen to be less intrusive which is a great step forward, but the volume overlay has remained unchanged!

Even on the iPad it can be very annoying getting in the way of video playback among other areas in apps where content is beneath the overlay...

This problem was remedied in the Jailbreak world many years ago via a tweak named StatusHUD, pictured bellow, however as mentioned above there's still no innovation in this area under stock iOS! Isn't it long overdue improvement? What's your opinion, does the Volume HUD irritate you or are you fine with how it currently is and has been for years? Vote above and comment bellow.

I agree, had it get in the way a few times during clash royale that almost lost me the match!

Fine with how it is. This thing needs to be clear and in the face so we know how much we adjust volumn. The time it takes to do is just minuscule I don't see a problem here.
I would be annoyed and angry if it's hidden somewhere (even in menu bar).

When gaming, Apple should put those HUD to somewhere not intrusive. For other apps, maybe putting in the middle of screen is acceptable. Still, we hope a better design of this element. It remains unchanged from iOS 1 to iOS 9.

Talking about blocking screen, "selective DnD" is also welcome so that I can disable notification when using certain apps without adjusting notification settings over and over, or turning on DnD over and over.

Yes. Just nick Instagram's or Snapchat's volume UI. Both are so simple and take up like 0.000001% of the screen!!

But if you know where it is it's not hidden. Mostly when watching videos it's at the bottom and doesn't cover the video content. Does that make you angry?

    Exactly. :D

If it's clear then it doesn't. My point is "subtle design" won't work. Period. Not everyone has 20/20. There will be many times users with glasses have to adjust volume when not wearing glasses. And if Apple test it in this kind of situation they wouldn't come up with a design everybody here want.

I say if it's a problem in game, then better to have an option to disable it than change the way it is.

At the same time the actual volume indicator is small. It's just the window that is big. Move it to the top with a blurred window the size of a notification and no one will miss it.

I'd be happy to have it much less intrusive, but at the same time for most typical users I can see why it's kind of "in your face" like that (since unfortunately many would then probably wonder whether or not they've actually changed volume or what they did had any effect at all).

The current hud is always getting in my way. not to mention that crazy system volume vs ringer volume thing. i.e. when you increase the ringer volume by mistake or the system volume depending on what app is in focus.

This compromise could end up be the worst of both worlds. it will not best serve typical users while still annoys gamers.

So current huge absolutely intrusive HUD does not serve gamers well. Moving it to the top of screen does not serve gamers well. Then how? Removing it entirely is not practical.
I am running out of idea on how to put it. But for me, putting at the top is by far far better than putting a huge window in front of me.

I don't agree that it won't serve typical users. But I'll play along. They could have one for full screen apps (status bar indicator) and another for non full screen apps (the current one).

For all the gamers out there, you can rest easy. With iOS 10, there is a way for apps to override the existing hud and only use their own implementation. The days of clash getting obscured by the pesky volume screen are numbered!

I miss the pre-iOS 7 Volume HUD that was transparent so it wouldn't obstruct the video.

My only issue is videos, I don't play game. But it needs to be fixed. It's 10 years too late, it should have never gotten to this point

Yep, Apple should copy Android's superior and clearer volume hud and controls.
