I have an AW S7 and am interested in getting an Ultra. there’s some great discounts in the UK for the Ultra right now, but I have decided to hold out for the second gen in a few weeks time.
having said that, with all this talk about Apple Watch X and changing the band connector, is it just too risky to buy any Apple Watch right now? The Ultra in particular isn’t exactly cheap. Clearly Gurman’s report about the X was a controlled leak. I’m just wondering whether Apple expect any sale of the S9 line of watches this year.

Any watch you buy now or soon is not going to stop working just because a new model may come out. I would not buy more than one or two bands with your new watch but most people find one or two bands sufficient.

Remember when the world was convinced the Series 7 was going to get an iPad-like, flat-edged redesign?

Still waiting on that one. (Or, did this rumor actually sorta predict the Ultra?)

Point is, Apple tries a lot of different design ideas out, not all of them make it to production. Further, the rumor mill is not always right about everything, no matter how sure of themselves they seem. Get the watch you want when you want it and enjoy it. If something changes in the future, deal with it then.

Think it was established that was the Ultra.

Think it was established that was the Ultra.
That makes the point for me. Some elements of truth – flat screen and redesigned case – became absolute certainty about a design that didn’t happen. In fact, the Series 7 went the opposite direction, going all-in on the existing round-edged design by pushing the screen to the edges under the curved glass and the Ultra took another full year to materialize.

There may be some element of truth to a magnetized connector on a forthcoming watch. Given the example of the Series 7 radical redesign, I wouldn’t take current rumors as gospel and not buy a product now that I could enjoy for years over changes that may never happen, or may not happen the way the rumor mill is so certain of today. YMMV.

If you can get a good deal on the Ultra it might be worth it.

There will be a new one, followed by another new one, followed by another new one. None of those new ones will prevent yours from working, and if you get a good deal on it you minimize resale loss.

The Apple Watch ultra has been great since I’ve owned it and I couldn’t ask for more in a watch 😄! John Lewis have a great deal on right now in the UK and if I didn’t already own one I would definately be buying one at that price

since you already decided to wait until after the announcement - why worry now? in a few weeks all you will have on hand will be facts and you can make your decision then, rather than dealing with rumors and speculation

Don’t see ultra as much of an upgrade from s7. Wait for better.

I’m talking about the announcement , the rumour mill is saying that all ranges will
Be completely replaced the following year.. as in 2024, and this includes the band connector making anything released this coming September redundant

I would hold off on the ultra because the series 6, 7, 8, SE 2, and Ultra 1 will be dropped at the same time.

I think that the most interesting thing will be the new chip for series 9 and ultra 2: if will be a real upgrade, ultra 2 will owrth it. If not, I think you can find better offer for ultra 1 after the 2023 release.

What was ‘leaked’ apart from a description about a flat design?
If I recall it was CAD drawings and then people created renders as in the pic above.
And again, that has no resemblance to the Ultra other than the flat screen yet you said:
“Think it was established that was the Ultra”
So, how did you come to that conclusion?

I think the Watch "X" will launch in 2 years, not next year. They'll probably wait for microLED screen tech first in the same way the iPhone X was the first iPhone with OLED. 2025 will mark 10 years of Apple Watch, it makes more sense to launch it then anyway.

As for the magnetic band rumor, I suspect Apple will manufacture an adapter that lets people use old bands with their new magnet system. If not Apple then someone else will.

Just wait

A lot depends on how you use your watch. Do you change your bands regularly? Will you keep your watch longer than you kept your S7? Apple and others will certainly continue making bands for the earlier mount for years to come, but they may not have quite as many to choose from and may not update them much they way they do now.

Hard to make that decision for you. If I needed a watch this year, I wouldn't hesitate. I don't change bands that much that I'd worry about it. I don't get too wrapped up in having and displaying the latest of anything. If you're not in a hurry, and you think the rumors indicate the future watch is better for you then you've got an excuse to save the money.

I wouldn't think so unless you have a severe case of FOMO.

If we assume such rumors are true, and Apple's making a completely new watch design for 2024, buyers this year are probably still in better shape, including from a band standpoint. Apple doesn't tend to experience a 100% success rate on their first generation designs. It sometimes takes a generation or two for them to refine based on real world usage and to integrate new technologies.

And from a band standpoint, there are 10 years worth of compatible band designs from Apple and 3rd party manufacturers. Enough to satisfy almost any need or taste. It'll take awhile for a new connector to be adopted as fully. If anyone's taking a risk, it's those who will jump onto a new design immediately before it matures.

We will all just wait and see. Personally the current Ultra suits me so well I cannot imagine upgrading, but we do not know what we do not know...

Rumors have the Ultra possibly getting a new color option this year. It’s still basically a brand new product line for Apple, so I doubt they’re going to dramatically change anything about the strap or charger anytime soon. The Watch line is evolving incrementally, and the Ultra was the biggest shakeup in that line in years. It’s not going to be revamped anytime soon.

S9 is less than a month away. I’d definitely wait to see what Apple drops:

Even if the 2023 AWs are not worth the wait, the launch of the new models will give even better discounts for all 2022 AWs (and older models as well) as retailers want to clear out old inventory.

To this date, Apple has only done major changes to AWs every 3-4 years(which seems to be a general strategy across all products).

So expecting the 2023 S9 and Ultra 2 to offer more than new color options and upgraded internals seems irrational to me.
