I don't get why would apple allow the iPhone to have the same MP camera for a 3rd year in a row.
Late 2013 and only 8MP? By the time iPhone 6 comes out the galaxy s5 might have a super 13-16mp camera

I understand MP isn't really that important but I remember when the iPhone 5 came out many people were disappointed that the camera was only 8MP.
If the next iPhone can have at least 10MP it will really be great. Best of both worlds.
HTC One superphone only has 4MP.
Your point?

The camera in the 5 is obviously much better than it's predecessors, but really as a camera it's poor.

Fortunately the majority of folks buy a camera to be a camera and a phone to be a phone. So if their iPhone or whatever makes calls, sends texts etc they are happy. If they want DSLR quality photos they will buy a DSLR

If you feel differently don't buy an iPhone. Apple isn't going to collapse over losing ya.

Well no, there's a huge shift now with people ditching point and shoots and using their phone as their main camera. So a smartphone having a decent camera is now quite an attraction for a lot of people. My house is full of Apple products, but I have zero loyalty to them, I buy whatever is the best product around. I will most likely be buying a Sony Honami when it's released. From the rumoured specifications of both the Honami & the 5s, there is no competition. The Honami wins hands down. I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who is going to decide to opt to switch from the Iphone to a superior product. And I'm sure me dumping my Iphone won't spell the death knell for the Apple Iphone, but really do you think that they can continue to produce new models that are so lacking in new technology and innovation and survive, especially considering the competition now? I don't like Android, IOS is superior, but IMHO the hardware specifications are much more important and phones like the Honami are going to be in a different league to the 5s.

Where did you get that garbage from ? Not true and you did a tad bit of home work and instead just mouthed off this nonsense. Oh ya, the post would be a better on the eyes if you used paragraphs. ;)

Have a look at the Iphone 3 for example - released in 2008 with a camera that was bettered by Sony Erricson phones from circa 2002

I don't agree with that at all. Go to any event, concert, vacation spot, etc and you'll see tons of people taking pictures with their phone and not with dedicated cameras. Sure, there will always be folks that use DSLRs but for the majority of folks, I'd say they expect their phone to be their primary camera.

It would be impossible to tell the difference between a 8mp and 10mp image when looking at it on your phone. It would still be hard to tell the difference looking at it on your computer screen. To really take advantage of more pixels you need a larger sensor which in return would require a larger lens.

The big new thing with the 5S is iOS7!

Larger sensors and lenses are coming but not on the 5S. Maybe a few extra pixels just to make us feel better.

I hope the "big new thing" on the 5S isn't iOS 7 considering the iPhone 4+ will be getting it.

I agree with you on that one! While I recognize that dedicated cameras take better pictures than our phones do... it is 2013 and in 2013 I expect my phone camera to be pretty darn good.

I hope the MP count stays the same, and that they also further improve the camera. I'd rather have a great 8 MP image that a lesser quality 16 MP image. Reduce it to 6MP if it helps low light performance. My last point and shoot camera had a lower MP count in the NEW model to help low light performance. It was the right decision.

I guess you will be excited about a finger reader? Or maybe you excite of different colors! LOL!

The 5S changes will be small in hardware. Change will come with the 6:p

8MP is more than enough, what would realy be great is if it had a significantly bigger and better sensor/lenses with optical image stabilization.

A xenon flash would be nice too, but that's asking too much i think.:D

Not excited at all actually.

I'll probably have my employer get me one though. I'm on Verizon on a 4S and I want LTE. Their 3G is terrible. If it was my money and all these rumors are true I'd just pick up a 5 or 5C.

Not just in cameras. Other things like LTE, voice commands, etc.

The iPhones have had limited voice commands well before Siri.

LTE - Apple waited until more efficient and smaller LTE chips were ready before adding it to their phones. Per Tim Cook - it would have forced too many design compromises.

Besides, LTE wasn't that wide spread here in the US. It's really come on strong the last 2 years and Apple has had an LTE phone out for almost a year now.

That's what was said but its all about manufacturing cost. They wanted to have to produce the least amount of models and cover the most amount of markets.

Then claim "oh its better a better user experience, efficiency blah blah".

But in reality the user experience is limited. iPhone 5 can't do voice and LTE on GSM as it reverts to 4G, the competition can. The iPhone 5 can't do voice and data on CDMA at all, the competition can.

So what's a better user experience? Obviously its more efficient, its less hardware doing less work (energy). But now its a moot point since battery life on competitor devices is about on par with the iPhone.

Nexus 4 did a very similar thing except to an extreme. No LTE, however there is only one model that covers most (if not all) GSM markets. No LTE sucks but its reflected in the price which is nice.

iPhone 4 - 5 MP
iPhone 5 - 8 MP
iPhone 5S - ??

If 8MP it will be the 2nd year in a row, but I am sure there will be some other improvements besides MP - if it stays at 8MP

You left out the 4S. If the 5S is 8mp then it will be the 3rd time.

You need to ask him to get off Verizon!

Whilst the Nokia Lumia 1020 might be too bulky for some with it's extra large sensor, and 41mp capability (for lossless digital zoom), it's predecessor the 925 was going in the right direction for other manufacturers to play catch up...

Bigger sensor than the competitors
Carl Zeiss glass
Optical image stabilisation to help reduce blur
Manual controls (via Nokia Pro Camera app)

Zeiss glass aside (which I doubt we will ever see in an iPhone), let's hope Apple follows suit in the other camera departments listed.

Will the 5S come with a quad core CPU? I mean this would be 3 years in a row with a dual core cpu i mean apple should really start innovating look at the s4 and it has a 8 core cpu woww!!

That's so so true. If 5s doesn't come with a quad core CPU I'm switching to android. Apple innovate, don't... What was the word.....
