There are keyboard stickers for that purpose. Currently using one. If I remove them, my keyboard will be brand new.

I used to think it was due to oily fingers and would clean my fingers and keyboards all the time...maybe too frequently at times. Once I joined a mechanical keyboard community I found out it's more often due to friction from fingers. The solution mechanical keyboard owners use is to lightly sand the keys to reduce/remove the shine. Search those communities for specifics. I haven't done it yet.

I am not sure I would recommend that. At least not with the new ones. My 2018 has a number of keys that are shiny after 6 months and a couple for which the paint is chipping away from the letters. I think sanding, even light sanding would not yield good results.

I'll try it on my 2013 this weekend and see how it goes. If I actually finish the project I'll post pictures to the thread.

Hopefully it will work better with the 2013. 2018 seems to have a super thin coating to begin with. Don’t think it can afford to lose anything before white will show through

I see. I don't have anything newer than a 2015 MBP, which seems about the same as the 2013. I haven't even so much as looked at a newer macbook.

Here are my “a” and “e” keys after 6 months and I keep my nails as short as possible. Not sure what it would look like otherwise

That's pretty bad. I would take those in under warranty if I was experiencing the same issue. My 2013 doesn't even look that worn. That's really unfortunate. I'm sorry you're experiencing that level of "quality."

I wish, but Apple considers it “cosmetic” and won’t do jack about it. Can’t wait to see what it looks like at the 1 year, 2 year, 3 year mark.

Unless it fails, I am stuck with it

My original 2018 that I had had the same problems with the A and left Command key. When Apple replaced it (that you are well aware of), I put a silicone cover on it to prevent the shiny keys. It makes it a bitch to type on, but since I used it docked most of the time anyway, I figured it was worth it. The shiny keys drive me nuts.

I had some issues with an unresponsive key already that I unfortunately “fixed” by tapping it repeatedly until it worked again. Unfortunately that was before the paint started chipping as it has.

If I had any idea that this would happen within 6 months, I would have not tried to fix it and just have them replace it.

If another key goes unresponsive I will have it replaced and maybe put those stickers on the keys. I use it as a laptop all the time, so the external keyboard isn’t an option.

But it’s a sorry state. I have a couple ancient Dells (12+ years) I keep as garage computers for a ECU tuning app, a 4 year old wireless keyboard for my iMac and a 18 month old Surface Pro with that keyboard cover and they all look better than my 6 month old MBP keyboard
