I don't know or sure how old but as long as it can handle movies and tv shows streaming on nPlayer Plus.

What the oldest iPad you would go with for local 4k hdr video movie and tv show files ?

I just checked and nPlayer Plus supports all the way down to iOS 9.0 :O

Thanks so a iPad (5th generation).

How do you think a lower end iPad would manage ? I doubt very well.

Lower end as in iPad 5th gen or do you mean older than 5th gen?

The 5th gen works fine, iirc. I seem to recall testing it with Infuse. However, color separation isn't as good as on the iPad Pros. To be honest though, at ~10", I don't really notice much difference between 4K and 1080p.

Yes.

True.

Older than 5th gen, I expect playing 4K HEVC would be a slideshow. I tried playing a full quality 4K UHD Blu-ray rip on a gigabit wired Apple TV 4th gen (Apple A8) with Infuse once and it wasn't really playable.

1080p should be fine even on A5 (iPad 2), though. One thing that did annoy me on the really old iPads, while the actual video playback was fine, browsing Netflix, Plex, etc. was frustratingly slow.

Crazy slow lol. I remember atleast 4 years ago I tried to use the iPad 2 for Netflix and was dead slow trying to navigate the app lol

If you’re looking to buy an older iPad for this purpose then focus on the price rather than how old the iPad is. Generally if the iPad is older than the 5th then it’s worth nothing almost.

If you’re getting it free or you already have one then that’s a different situation.
