Hi all,
is it worth buying an apple watch first generation for $150? I don't know if I should or not because I fear the value of it will drop soon since the 3rd gen will release soon and also apple may not give updates to it when the 3rd gen is released. what do you guys think? would you get it?
also will it always be compatible with every iphone? like the iphone 8 next year?

If you fear the value dropping then you should never buy ANY electronics (or most anything else). No one can say for sure how long it will be supported but it likely has a few more wOS to go. Being a watch Apple will probably support it longer than 'disposable' phones.

Is it new (unopened) and which model is it? If it is an Edition buy as many as you can.:D

There are no guarantees how long any electronic will be supported, let alone an Apple Watch. The first Gen Watch will likely be supported through WatchOS Four.

As for your purchase, 38 MM Sport in perfect condition for $150.00, I would not pay any higher than that. If it were me, I wouldn't pay over $130 for a 38 MM Sport Gen One. There was actually a flash sale about two weeks where Gen One 38 MM were selling for $100.00 New. Plus, the market is saturated with them.

what website was selling them for $100?

Walmart had a 24 Hour sale. There may have been another retailer, but I don't recall which one. There was also a thread on this as well.

do you have a link to the thread? i have been trying to search for it, but it doesn't come up

I have no idea where it is. I do recall commenting on it. It was a 24 flash sale offered by Walmart on select first Gen 38 MM Sport models. NOT all Walmart stores were participating, but it was not advertised from my understanding. Again, it was a ONE day sale, Somewhere around mid March.

You could make an argument that a used S0 watch is the best value for your money compared to all of the other Apple Watches. That Walmart flash sale posted above would be a no brainer.

The newer watches do offer waterproofness, better battery, and GPS. But if don't need those features then the original Apple watch functions virtually the same at a fraction of the cost.

I wouldn't worry too much about the value dropping since the original Apple watch is already selling at a very depreciated amount.

$150 for a Series 0 38mm seems a little high, even in perfect condition. I occasionally see Target selling Series 1 38mm for $200. I have no problems with my Series 0 watch and have no need for a Series 1/2. So if the price is right then I say go for it (depending on what you need it for). But $150 is high IMO.

thanks so much! do you guys think walmart will have the flash sales more often for apple watches? or i shouldn't count on it?

how much do you think its worth it for?

I don't believe we will see another Walmart flash sale as they were doing it to clear their stock. Its possible Target or Best Buy may have leftover stock and run a flash sale.

I would personally pay $100 max for a S0 38mm in pristine condition, and $125 for a 42mm. $150 is getting too close to the S1 price for me. Especially considering your S0 won't have warranty.

Wait till the third gen, because just like iPads and iPhones, thats when the 1st gen will be ridiculously cheap to pick up. If it were an iPhone (at its own respective price) I would say buy right away, but there is nothing prudent about the apple watch that you can't sit it out a bit longer.

is S0 = 1st generation and S1 = 2nd generation?

The problem with the watch being uncharted territory is that watchOS 4 may not be supported on the original watch. So waiting till 3rd gen launches may get you a discontinued product and then you will be paying more for an S1/S2.

Additionally, 3rd gen may not launch until next spring if they keep the 18 month cycle.

Kind of. S0 = 1st gen, S2 = 2nd gen. S1 is an upgraded S0. So S1 = 1.5 gen.

Then you wouldn't encourage him to pay in earlier at a higher price when a product refresh is just around the corner. Lets say he buys it now, new watch and OS released next week. He just overpaid for an item by not sitting on his hands, value drops and he paid more for a device that won't run the newest OS. If he waited, he could have seen if watchOS 4 was implemented on the first generation and make his decision from there. Don't get me wrong, if this were the iPhone or iPad I would say buy it now at full price. But the Apple Watch really isn't worth pulling the trigger on unless you're getting it for cheap.

I said next Spring.

watchOS 4 will be released in Fall, but 3rd get hardware may not be launched until Spring 2018.

Sorry about that. Either way, I don't think it is worth it. The Apple Watch isn't a must have like Macs, iPads and iPhones are. My best advice would be to sit on it. Maybe the third generation will be what the first two should have been and at that point I'd tell him to buy it full price, brand new without a second thought.

And I have already told the OP twice that the price is too high ($150) and the issues about not getting a warranty with it. But I don't think we will see another Apple Watch for 12 months, next spring. 18 month cycles.

Watchos 4 won't release until September 2017 for public release. And no one knows if an Apple Watch will release in Fall 2017 or not, it's only been rumored at this point. The next possible major revamp is likely somewhere around March 2018 as Mlrollin91 stated. Everything is speculation until confirmed by Apple.

Umm ok what? Your posts are making it seem like I am telling the OP a different thing than I actually am. Please thoroughly read my posts before quoting them.

I already apologized, you are really starting to sound like a broken record.
