I found a listing for a mid-2011 iMac for $200 on CL with the following description:

"IMac 27" (Mid-2011). Processor 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 (4 cores) 4gb memory 1333MHz DDR3 32 bit color New hard drive installed 2015 (in limited warranty until 12/11/19); factory reset completed by repair shop.

SOLD AS IS FOR PARTS ONLY.

Began having problems booting and shutting down without notice. Took to repair shop and was determined that power supply needs to be replaced. Until power supply is replaced it is unknown what else may be needed. Decided not to have it repaired, so selling for parts (as a whole)."

I've seen the power supply listed on sites like iFixit for $135, but I am also taking a chance at the possibility that there is more than just the power supply that needs to be replaced. I've never owned an iMac before (casual use on my university campus only) and I would definitely follow a guide to make sure I do everything correct. Would you guys think this is a good general plan to follow through with? Is there a particular guide that you'd recommend?

The question:
"Is it worth buying for-parts-only mid-2011 iMac to repair it yourself?"

The answer:
Only if you are 100% assured at your likelihood of success.

Give it a miss. Looking at least at $350.00 and for your use 4GB of memory is nowhere near sufficient. If the drive is a platter drivebthey are as slow as treacle compared to an SSD, and it only has USB2 ports, no USB3.

I appreciate the replies! I did end up skipping this in favor of my friend's 2009 iMac fully specced and with an SSD. I'm still waiting to hear back for a price offer, but at least I know everything is operational on his iMac.
