I frequently work with 2 or more iPads at the same time (and they're all 9.7").

So does my mom. She kept her iPad 2 when she upgraded to the Air, and she now uses them side by side to compare two documents, look up some info on one while keeping her main document open in the other, etc.

I bought a Retina Mini first and then bought an Air a few months later. I use them both daily and use the Mini as my iPod in my car through bluetooth. It replaced my 160GB Classic.

If you have both in everyday use is when you do notice the difference, going from one to the other. Not just side by side.

I completely disagree. I no not notice a difference in viewing pleasure or viewing ability between the two. The rMini is certainly more portable and it goes with me everywhere but I like the AIr for viewing movies/videos because it is louder than the rMini and I can hear it better.
Having both for me is almost a necessity. I use both heavily for different tasks.

I have both and while I could easily live with just one, I prefer them for different scenarios.
Air. This stays at home and is the one I use most of the time. I never use the retina mini at home at all.
Retina mini. I keep this in my laptop bag for work. It is handy when I need to review and annotate technical PDFs. I also take it with me to poker tournaments for the occasional long break as it is much more relaxing to use than my iPhone but noticeably more portable than the Air. I also take the mini on travel be it work or holidays, again for portability and I am less likely to use it for extended periods like I would at home.
I prefer the Air overall because I find the larger screen size that bit more comfortable, especially at night time, otherwise I would have just stuck with the one retina Mini. I think the size difference is enough to warrant both depending on how you use them.

As someone who had both, trust me its a waste of money. I now only have the air.

People who say both are needed are wimps (sorry). Its not like the air weighs that much more or that much larger.

Its like saying you need two cars. One for short commutes and the other for long commutes.

I will always have both and use both daily.

It's nothing to do with the weight. I can slide the mini into a large pocket when out and about. I can't do that with an Air.
It's only a waste if you don't get enough use out of both - it works for some people but not for all. You could also argue that why have an iPad when an iPhone can effectively do the same thing? If you can carry an Air with you, you can just as easily carry an iPhone with you. The one thing different between all the devices is the screen size and it all depends on how this fits in with your lifestyle and how you work.

There was a time when I had both an iPad Air and an iPad Mini (non-retina). I quickly gave the mini to my brother as he didn't even have a computer.

It all depends on how you intend to use both devices and your budget. If you can afford both, and have a good number of uses for both, go for it. Why not.

If I had kept the mini, I would have used it as a reader. I loved reading on that thing, even over the iPad Air.

I have both and wouldn't give one up. As with you I also have a MacBook Air but my phone is a 6+.

I also have both. They get used differently, for different purposes. (I also have two iPhone 6es, one for work, one for personal use.) The Air mostly stays at home. My rMBP and the Mini2 go back and forth to work with me - I commute by train, and the Mini2 is a great tool for dealing with work on the train without the extra size of the Air. Sounds crazy but it works for me.

I splurged on an iPad Air 2 128gb with cellular so can't really afford a 2nd iPad but if I could I probably get an iPad mini 3 since I never owned an mini and like the size of it as well

Upgrade your 5s to a Plus. You now have a better alternative to having two ipads and even more portability to stay connected.

iPads in general are very redundant if you already have an iphone. Better wait for iPad Pro.

That's purely down to the user. I have an iPhone which is always with me because of it's small size but at home, I always use my iPad Air 2 and when travelling or at work, I use my iPad mini. Different usage cases depending on locations and my requirements.

I just got hired to be a sales rep at Verizon. I am a huge apple fan. I have an iPhone 5s, iPad air, and just got a MacBook Air. I love the form factor of the mini and want to stay connected at all times due to my work. Is it a waste of money?

No it's not. I'm at work right now, have my mini and iPhone with me. The mini fits my back pocket and I use it all day.
My air is at home where I use it a lot. I would not give either of them up.

I agree just get the Retina Mini if you prefer that size. Having both is a waste.

Go for the cellular version. It's only $10 extra per month for your iPad to have its own data.

Or free data withT-mobile, but your new boss might not like it.

If you can afford it then why the hell not! :)

iPad Mini is perfect for commuting and travelling, plus can get wi-fi off your phones hot spot and use it for the web just as well as you would your phone.

I consider the Mini s great companion to the iPhone as its that bit bigger for some tasks.

Do you NEED it? No, you've got the essential devices. If you want one though, go for it!

I am also one that has both the retina iPad mini 2 and I recently just upgraded my iPad 4 to the iPad Air 2. Both iPads are the 128gb model with LTE. I enjoy having both iPads and I do use both of them more than I thought I would. I often have both of them with me. I know, seems a bit much to carry 2 iPads and an iPhone as well.

I will often use the two iPads at work while on break, the mini I will play a video or movie and use the larger iPad for checking emails, Facebook etc. or even working on some plans and excel or numbers spreadsheets. At home, often the same thing. With iCloud, One Drive and DropBox, about 95% of my things are in sync with each other so it doesn't matter which device I work with.

Sometime's I will just take one of the devices with me and that will be fine, because I know that things will sync to each other and the iMac at home. So for me, having both the regular size iPad and the Mini is yes. I will admit though that I do use the larger iPad more than the mini, but the mini is also used more for watching movies and stuff while working on the larger unit.

I've done the whole 2 tablets thing before...it's excessive and a total waste of money solely because of a lack of self control when it comes to buying gadgets. In the end, I sold the smaller one and much happier with just one big tablet.

Truth be told, just go to an Apple Store and play with the Mini for a little bit, then walk away :p

If we are all totally honest a lot of Apple products overlap to the point that it's 'pointless' to have more than a couple of devices if you look at what they do.

For example your iphone and MacBook are all you need!

But, why not enjoy other gadgets and if you fancy and can afford an iPad Mini then go for it!!

I have an iPhone, an iPad and Mini which all do similar things in slightly bigger or smaller ways but I enjoy using them.

The iPad Mini is the perfect tablet when you're on the move :)
